Senior Accountant

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for overseeing and managing the financial operations of the designated business areas. Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Senior Accountant will play a crucial role in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations, and providing financial insights to support strategic decision-making for the division.Role responsibilities are:
- Financial Reporting and Analysis:
- Prepare daily and weekly ‘flash’ trading results summaries.
- Prepare monthly management accounts in accordance with the company’s accounting policies and IFRS.
- Prepare annual financial statements in accordance with the company’s accounting policies and IFRS.
- Conduct variance analysis and provide insights into financial performance.
- Generate financial reports and present them to management, highlighting key findings and recommendations.
- Group consolidations and intercompany eliminations.
- Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management activities.
- Reconcile forex gains/losses.
- Perform other ad-hoc financial analysis and reporting as required.
- General Ledger Management:
- Oversee and maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate recording of financial transactions.
- Cash management and bank reconciliations, including validity, accuracy and completeness thereof.
- Perform reconciliations of balance sheet accounts and intercompany transactions and balances.
- Monitor and maintain fixed asset records, depreciation, and amortization schedules.
- Review and reconcile monthly payroll calculations including sales rep commission calculations.
- Credit card management and reconciliations.
- Assist with month- and year-end closings.
- Taxes
- Preparation and submission of income tax returns (ITR14 and IRP6) and related schedules.
- VAT reconciliations and preparation and submission of VAT returns (VAT 201).
- Payroll and payroll tax reconciliations (PAYE, SDL and UIF) and preparation and submissions of returns (EMP 201, EMP 501).
- Preparation of IT14SD reconciliations and schedules (VAT, PAYE and Income Tax).
- Liaison with tax authorities.
- Financial Controls and Compliance:
- Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard company assets and maintain financial integrity.
- Maintain vigilance over new operational and financial risks and implement controls to mitigate risks.
- Stay up-to-date with accounting regulations and ensure compliance with statutory reporting requirements.
- Assist in developing and enhancing financial policies and procedures.
- Audit
- Coordinate with external auditors during the annual audit process and provide necessary documentation and support as required.
- Preparation of audit files and analytical reviews of independent reviews.
- Ensure audit is completed within timeline planned.
- Liaison with external auditors.
- Team Leadership and Collaboration:
- Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff, providing guidance and support in their professional development.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including finance, operations, and management, to analyze financial data and drive process improvements.
- Act as a key point of contact for financial queries and provide guidance to stakeholders.
Role requirements are:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A professional accounting qualification (e.g., CA, SAIPA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA etc) is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or senior role.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, IFRS, and tax regulations.
- Proficient in financial management software, and ERP systems (NetSuite and CaseWare experience advantageous).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data.
- Capability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to work well under pressure and deliver to tight deadlines.
- Exceptional attention to detail, with a commitment to accuracy and reliability.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to present financial information clearly and concisely.
