Role Summary

We are seeking a seasoned Engineering Manager to lead and grow our design and engineering function in South Africa. You will play a pivotal role in translating initial concept designs into fully detailed, construction-ready systems. This is a highly strategic role supporting both project execution and business development, requiring a robust mix of technical expertise, team leadership, and stakeholder engagement—particularly within the PV solar and BESS sectors.

The ideal candidate will have experience navigating Eskom, strong EPC/O&M negotiation skills, and hands-on technical oversight from concept to commissioning. You’ll also ensure corporate technical assurance and compliance across all our engineering efforts.

🎓 Educational Background & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (required).
• 10+ years’ experience in the solar PV industry, with 5+ years in a leadership or managerial role.
• Experience across EPC, technical consulting, and/or asset management.
• Previous experience working in multinational, matrix organizations with diverse legal and regulatory contexts.
• Registered with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa).

Key Responsibilities

🔹 KRA 1: Team Leadership and Stakeholder Management

• Lead the engineering and technology team for all South African projects and M&A assessments.
• Collaborate with project development and business development teams to optimize engineering designs through to financial close.
• Establish and maintain high-performing team management processes aligned with global best practices in solar PV engineering.
• Recruit, mentor, and retain a team of solar PV experts.
• Understand customer needs and deliver technically sound, commercially viable solutions.

🔹 KRA 2: Technical Design Knowledge and Project Management

• Provide expert technical support for design and review across all project phases (pre-construction, construction, and as-built).
• Lead technical negotiations with clients and EPC contractors.
• Stay abreast of PV and BESS technology advancements and contribute to equipment selection.
• Expertly manage compliance with Grid Code, NERSA, and SANS/NRS standards.
• Conduct Energy Yield Assessments using PVSyst and other tools for varied terrains and rooftops.
• Review and optimize project designs, ensuring long-term performance and alignment with regulations and best practices.
• Support construction, PAC, and FAC phases with QA/QC inspections, factory acceptance tests, and issue resolution.
• Generate PV layouts and single-line diagrams (SLDs) using AutoCAD and similar tools.
• Develop tools to evaluate DEVEX, CAPEX, and OPEX assumptions.

🔹 KRA 3: Compliance and Quality Control

• Lead pre-construction documentation including technical appendices and contractor obligations.
• Review and define technical specifications for all key PV plant components (modules, inverters, switchgear, transformers, BESS, cables, trackers, monitoring systems).
• Maintain regular contact with suppliers for technical alignment and optimization.
• Perform simulations, uncertainty analyses, and P50/P90 energy production forecasts.
