1 MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT
WWF’s strategy harnesses the strengths of the WWF network in a shared vision, focusing on six major goals - water, wildlife, the ocean, climate and energy, forests, and food – and three key drivers of environmental problems – markets, finance and governance. Our vision is to protect and restore nature for the benefit of people and the planet in support of sustainable development goals.
In support of this strategy, WWF International is designed to unite WWF offices and its nearly 6,400 staff worldwide. This enables WWF to build strong partnerships with governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals worldwide. Together, we will deliver on WWF’s ambitious goals.
WWF oversees and supports the Country Offices that are managed by WWF International in the region – Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
2 MAJOR FUNCTIONS
The role focuses on raising funding and resources to support WWF Country Offices in the East and Southern Africa and Congo Basin regions. It will drive growth in resource acquisition and diversify funding streams through public and private sector partnerships, trusts and foundations, and multilateral agencies, aligning with the Global Resource Strategy, WWF Global Practices, and Regional and Country strategies.
- Support WWF Country Offices in increasing and diversifying their income sources (bilateral and multilateral public sector partners, major gift donors, foundations, corporates) by providing strategic and practical fundraising support in line with Regional and Country strategies.
- Building and strengthening the network of fundraising managers in the Africa offices to promote information sharing, learning and sharing as well as jointly working on resource acquisition opportunities.
- Build networks and partnerships with the donor community, with a specific focus on building a strategic partnership with various Donors/Development Agencies.
- In conjunction with the Programme Quality Director, Conservation Impact Director and Regional Directors provide strategic direction for fundraising by developing a focused and aligned regional strategy and business plan, based on relevant market understanding and analysis of Regional and Country Office needs
- Develop strategic partnerships with identified INGOs and other partners for joint fundraising efforts and to leverage significant funding.
3 MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drive the implementation of an Africa-wide Resource Acquisition Framework and support all the 11 WWF country offices to develop and implement their resource acquisition plans
- Work with the WWF Network Donor Offices to conduct/update market scans for regional and national funding opportunities.
- Collect, collate and communicate the latest information on resource acquisition opportunities to Country Offices and Regional Programme teams to help identify strategic opportunities
- Provide practical guidance and support to country offices and regional programmes in the design of concepts and proposals
- As appropriate, prepare and oversee the creation of high-quality proposals, and grant applications, in alignment with required donor formats and standards, and provide proposal writing capacity for countries as and when it is needed and possible
- Secure multi-year and diverse funding to meet country, transboundary landscapes and regional needs.
- Support, advise and build capacity in Country Offices on the development and management of Public Sector Partnerships and Corporate Partnerships communities of practice in Africa
- Proactively engage with key donors in the development of their investment strategies and programmes for the Africa regions as they relate to WWF’s areas of interest.
- Work with the Regional Management Team and Country Teams to develop an integrated strategy that maps out fundraising opportunities and identifies themes attractive to donors, towards raising the required resources for implementation of the Regional and Country Strategies
- Provide strategic direction for Regional and Country Office teams to pursue non-traditional funding sources, identifying emerging or untapped high potential donors and new emerging models
- Represent WWF in meetings with partners and in Public Sector Partnership related forums
- In accordance with WWF International Fundraising and Partnership processes and the Regional and National Strategic Cycles, advise the Regional Director in setting annual grant income projections for Africa
- Monitor fundraising performance and adjust strategies to meet or exceed targets.
4 PROFILE
Required Qualifications.
- At least a master’s degree in Environmental/Conservation, Environmental Economics, Sustainable Development, International Development Studies, or a related field of work
- At least 10 years of experience of which at least 5 have been in providing leaderships and hands-on engagement in big-ticket fundraising for transformational programs with INGOs
- Proven track record of managing internal and external multi-stakeholder processes, including demonstrated experience in multi-dollar and multi-country fundraising, donor relations, communications, project planning, project cycle and portfolio management, and donor stewardship.
Required Skills and Competencies.
- Ability to translate donor language related to guidelines and requirements to ensure that
- concept notes/proposals are compliant with donor requirements.
- Knowledge of policies, priorities, strategies and regulations of donors
- Strong analytical and presentation skills
- Good strategic visioning, critical and strategic thinking, and the ability to develop innovative and strategic partnerships with a results focus
- Strong interest in promoting WWF shared values and has a strong interest in conservation and strong understanding of African trends in fundraising, conservation and development
- Good facilitation and influencing skills, and the ability to provide support and training to staff

- Strong diplomatic and communication skills with the ability to engage at a strategic level with bilateral and multilateral donors, international organisations, host government ministries and partner NGOs
- Strong cross-cultural negotiation, partnering, networking and representational skills
- Fluency in both spoken and written English; working knowledge of written and verbal French and/or Portuguese will be an added advantage
- Ability to travel internationally on a regular basis

5 WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Internal.
Reports to the Director, Programme Quality – Africa, and interacts extensively with the Africa Regional teams, Practice teams and Global Fundraising teams, Country Offices, transboundary program teams, regional initiatives and other departments at WWF International.
External.
Bilateral and multilateral public sector partners, donors, foundations, multilateral donors, corporates, other INGOs/NGOs; conservation and development partners.
