Job Summary: Under the direction of the Project Engineer, the Technician is responsible for responsible for the assessment, design, troubleshooting, water quality monitoring, and implementation of rural water projects to a high degree of excellence and according to all standards and requirements of Water Mission Malawi. This role requires technical expertise, practical problem-solving skills, and a commitment to working in challenging environments to deliver sustainable solutions. This person must be willing to work in the field for up to one week regularly and occasionally for longer periods. Engage and participate in prayer before and after team meetings.Lead and participate in biblically based staff devotions. 1.2 Technical Assessment, Planning and Installation Conduct site assessments in rural communities to identify WASH needs and infrastructure requirements.Conduct technical assessments for existing and proposed water projectsAssist in collecting and analyzing data to inform project planning, survey, water source development, and design.Support the preparation of technical reports and project proposals.Perform water quality testing and support engineers during source selection and project planning. Inspect existing water systems and identify operational or infrastructure gaps. Prepare technical assessment reports and submit findings to the Project Engineer. Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of quantities. Install, connect, test, and maintain water supply system components, including water storage tanks, submersible pumps, pipelines, valves, water meters, taps, fittings, and other plumbing fixtures in accordance with approved designs, technical specifications, Water Mission standardsInstall water treatment systems, remote monitoring equipment, and solar-powered pumping systems. Read and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and engineering specifications. Install, wire, test, and commission electrical systems for water supply projects, including control panels, pumps, motors, generators, instrumentation, and distribution systems. Install and commission solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, inverters, charge controllers, batteries, and associated electrical equipment. Install remote monitoring equipment, telemetry devices, sensors, and control systems. Conduct electrical testing to verify system performance and compliance with engineering standards. Fabricate steel structures, pipe supports, equipment frames, platforms, brackets, and other metal components in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications. Read and interpret fabrication drawings, technical sketches, and material schedules. Perform cutting, grinding, drilling, fitting, welding, and finishing of metal components using approved welding techniques. Install fabricated steel structures and metal assemblies at project sites. Support installation of water treatment equipment, storage tanks, pump assemblies, and other engineering infrastructure requiring fabricated components. Inspect fabricated work to ensure dimensional accuracy, structural integrity, and compliance with Water Mission quality standards. Maintain accurate fabrication records and material usage documentation. Collect and upload project data, including equipment information, installation records, GPS coordinates, and photographs. Supervise borehole drilling activities, yield testing, and contractor performance during project implementation. Conduct yield testing to determine the capacity of water sources. 1.3 Design and Implementation: Assist in the design of water supply and sanitation systems, including solar boreholes, pumping equipment, pipelines, and sanitation facilities.Support the creation of technical drawings, specifications, and bills of quantities (BoQs).Participate in the construction and installation of WASH infrastructure, ensuring adherence to technical specifications and safety standards. 1.4 Troubleshooting, Operation and Maintenance: Identify and resolve technical issues related to WASH infrastructure.Perform routine maintenance and repairs on water supply systems and sanitation facilities.Train community members on the operation and maintenance of WASH infrastructure.Support commissioning and operational testing of newly completed water systems. Provide technical support to system operators through on-site and remote troubleshooting. Conduct refresher training for system operators to strengthen system sustainability. Support emergency water supply and disaster response activities through rapid technical assessments and system installation. 1.5 Water Quality Monitoring: Conduct water quality testing and monitoring to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.Record and analyze water quality data and report findings to the project team.Implement corrective measures to address water quality issues. 1.6 Community Engagement and Capacity Building: Work closely with community leaders and members to ensure their active participation and ownership of WASH projects.Conduct hygiene promotion and education sessions to encourage safe water use and sanitation practices.Provide technical support and training to local WASH committees.Supervise community volunteers during trench excavation, pipe installation, and construction activities. Train local water system operators on routine operation, preventive maintenance, and safe operation of Water Mission systems. Promote community ownership to support long-term sustainability of completed water systems. Provide technical guidance to communities during project implementation. 1.7 Project Management Support: Assist in the preparation and management of project budgets and timelines.Support the monitoring and evaluation of WASH projects, including data collection and analysis.Prepare progress reports for internal and external stakeholders, including donors. 1.8 Logistics and Administrative Support Support procurement and logistics activities by collecting and delivering quotations, purchase orders, supplies, and related documentation. Coordinate transportation of project materials and equipment when required. Support maintenance of organizational facilities by carrying out plumbing and minor electrical repairs. Assist with vehicle certification and servicing activities as assigned. Participate in quarterly and annual inventory verification exercises. 1.9 Health, Safety, and Compliance Comply with Water Mission health, safety, environmental, safeguarding, and operational policies. Promote safe working practices during construction, installation, and maintenance activities. Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, lifting equipment, and other safety devices during field operations. Ensure compliance with engineering standards, organizational procedures, and applicable regulations. 2.0 Reporting and Documentation Prepare technical assessment, installation, maintenance, and follow-up reports. Submit weekly timesheets, project reports, photographs, and supporting documentation within established timelines. Liquidate project advances promptly in accordance with organizational financial procedures. Maintain accurate technical records and project documentation. 2.1 Other Responsibilities Participate in technical training and continuous professional development. Support emergency response and disaster relief operations as required. Perform other duties assigned by the Project Engineer. 2.0 Qualifications, Skills, and Experience2.1 Relationship and Alignment: Personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Alignment with Water Mission’s Statement of Faith and core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity 2.2 Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Water Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources, Renewable Energy systems, or a related field. Candidates with relevant City & Guilds qualifications in Electrical Installation, Plumbing, or Mechanical Engineering/Services, or equivalent technical qualifications may also be considered.Registered or eligibility to register with MEI as a Graduate Engineer, Technician Engineer or Craftsperson. Minimum of 3-4 years of experience in WASH project assessment, design, troubleshooting, water quality monitoring, implementation, operation and maintenance.Practical experience working in rural and low-resource settings.Proficiency in using technical equipment and tools for water quality testing and system maintenance.Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Fluency in [local language(s)] and English.Willingness to travel frequently to remote project sites.
