Position Summary: Under the direction of the Project Engineer, with technical guidance from the Projects Engineer, the Senior Technician provides technical leadership for the construction, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of Water Mission water systems. The Senior Technician leads field installation teams, supervises technicians, contractor personnel, and community labour, and ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Water Mission engineering standards, national regulations, and project specifications. The position also provides technical support for system troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, water quality monitoring, community training, and disaster response activities. The role located in Zomba, requires frequent travel to remote project locations within Malawi and occasional travel to other countries where Water Mission operates. Participate in prayer before and after team meetings and engage in biblically based staff devotions. Demonstrate Water Mission's core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity in all aspects of work. Technical Leadership Lead the installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of rural water supply systems, including solar-powered water systems, treatment systems, pipelines, storage tanks, pumping equipment, distribution networks, and associated infrastructure. Install and commission solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, including electrical wiring, inverters, control panels, main switches, solar arrays, and related electrical components. Ensure all installations comply with approved engineering drawings, technical specifications, organizational standards, and national electrical and building regulations. Interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and construction documents to guide implementation activities. Conduct technical assessments, engineering surveys, water quantity and water quality investigations, and support engineering design activities. Construction Supervision Supervise Technicians, Technician Assistants, contractors, and community labour during project implementation. Coordinate and oversee the work of plumbers, welders, masons, electricians, drilling contractors, and other construction personnel. Ensure construction activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards. Monitor contractor performance and provide technical guidance to ensure compliance with project requirements. Operations, Maintenance and Troubleshooting Lead troubleshooting, fault diagnosis, and repair of solar-powered water systems, pumping systems, treatment equipment, pipelines, storage facilities, and electrical installations. Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for completed water systems. Respond promptly to operational issues affecting completed projects and recommend improvements to enhance system reliability and sustainability. Support routine operation and maintenance activities to maximize system uptime and performance. Water Quality and System Performance Conduct water quality testing and monitor system performance to ensure compliance with Water Mission and national water quality standards. Supervise borehole drilling activities, yield testing, pump testing, and water quality sampling. Ensure accurate recording and reporting of technical and water quality data. Support commissioning activities and verifying system performance before project handover. Capacity Building and Community Support Train local system operators, Water User Committees, and community representatives on operation, routine maintenance, preventive maintenance, and water quality monitoring. Coach and mentor Technicians to strengthen technical capacity and promote continuous improvement. Support community engagement activities that contribute to long-term sustainability of completed water systems. Project Reporting and Quality Assurance Prepare timely technical reports, assessment reports, maintenance reports, monthly progress reports, photographs, and project documentation. Maintain accurate installation, maintenance, and commissioning records. Ensure completed projects meet Water Mission's quality standards before handover. Identify opportunities to improve construction quality, efficiency, and technical performance. Health, Safety and Compliance Promote a safe working environment by ensuring compliance with organizational health, safety, environmental, and safeguarding policies. Ensure all construction and installation activities comply with applicable engineering standards and regulatory requirements. Maintain tools, testing equipment, vehicles, and work sites in a safe and serviceable condition. Other Responsibilities Support disaster response and emergency deployments within Malawi and other Water Mission country programs as required. Participate in organizational training and continuous professional development. Perform other duties assigned by the Project Engineer or Projects Engineer. 2.0 Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Relationship and Alignment Personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Education and Experience Diploma, Higher Diploma, or Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Water Engineering, or a related discipline. Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in construction, installation, and maintenance of rural water supply systems, preferably solar-powered water systems. Demonstrated experience supervising technical teams and contractors. Experience with solar PV installations, electrical systems, plumbing, construction, and water treatment systems. Registration as a Graduate Engineer or Professional Engineer with the Malawi Engineering Institution (MEI) or eligibility for registration. Relevant technical certifications (e.g., T2/T3 Electrical License, NCA certification) are desirable. Valid Class B driver's licence. Ability to drive manual 4x4 vehicle Skills and Abilities Advanced knowledge of rural water supply systems, solar pumping systems, plumbing, electrical installations, and construction practices. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for mechanical, electrical, and water treatment systems. Excellent leadership, coaching, and team supervision skills. Strong analytical, planning, and organizational abilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including cross-cultural communication. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and engineering software such as EPANET AutoCAD or similar drafting applications. High level of integrity, accountability, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple assignments, and deliver quality work under challenging field conditions. Willingness and ability to travel extensively to remote project sites and occasionally to other Water Mission country programs.
