Position Summary: Under the direction of the Projects Engineer, the Technician - Electrical is responsible for supporting the assessment, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems for safe water supply projects in accordance with Water Mission engineering standards and organizational procedures. The Technician-Electrical works closely with Engineers, Technicians, contractors, suppliers, and community stakeholders to ensure electrical systems are installed safely, operate reliably, and remain sustainable through effective maintenance, technical support, and community capacity building. The position is based in Mangochi/Zomba, Malawi, and requires frequent travel to project locations throughout Malawi as operationally required. Participate in prayer before and after team meetings and engage in biblically based staff devotions. Demonstrate Water Mission's core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity in all aspects of work. Support the integration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through appropriate words and actions consistent with Water Mission's mission. Support Water Mission's vision of ensuring all people have safe water and an opportunity to experience God's love. 1.2 Technical Assessment and Installation Conduct technical assessments to support the design, installation, rehabilitation, and expansion of electrical systems for safe water projects. Assist Engineers in assessing electrical requirements for water treatment facilities, pumping systems, and related infrastructure. Read and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and engineering specifications. Install, wire, test, and commission electrical systems for water supply projects, including control panels, pumps, motors, generators, instrumentation, and distribution systems. Install and commission solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, inverters, charge controllers, batteries, and associated electrical equipment. Install remote monitoring equipment, telemetry devices, sensors, and control systems. Conduct electrical testing to verify system performance and compliance with engineering standards. Collect and upload technical installation data, equipment information, and project documentation. 1.3 Operations and Maintenance Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of electrical installations and equipment. Troubleshoot electrical faults affecting pumps, motors, generators, control systems, solar-powered systems, and remote monitoring equipment. Repair or replace defective electrical components to minimize operational downtime. Support commissioning and operational testing of newly completed water systems. Provide technical support to system operators during troubleshooting and maintenance activities. Support emergency repairs and rehabilitation of electrical systems during operational incidents and disaster response activities. 1.4 Construction Support Support Engineers during construction and installation of safe water infrastructure. Supervise contractors, electricians, and community volunteers during electrical installation activities. Monitor contractor performance and ensure work complies with approved drawings, specifications, and Water Mission quality standards. Coordinate electrical installation activities with civil, plumbing, and mechanical works to ensure timely project completion. 1.5 Community Capacity Building Train local system operators on the operation, routine inspection, and preventive maintenance of electrical and solar-powered water systems. Provide technical guidance to communities during installation and post-construction support visits. Promote community ownership and good operational practices to support long-term system sustainability. 1.6 Health, Safety, and Compliance Comply with Water Mission health, safety, environmental, safeguarding, and operational policies. Ensure all electrical work complies with applicable electrical codes, engineering standards, and organizational procedures. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and electrical safety equipment during installation and maintenance activities. Promote safe electrical working practices, including lockout/tagout procedures where applicable. Maintain electrical tools, testing instruments, and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition. 1.7 Reporting and Documentation Prepare electrical installation, commissioning, inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting reports. Maintain accurate records of electrical equipment, testing results, maintenance activities, and project documentation. Submit weekly technical and activity reports and supporting documentation within established timelines. Maintain complete project records, including photographs, equipment registers, and electrical test reports. 1.8 Other Responsibilities Participate in technical training and continuous professional development. Support emergency response and disaster relief activities requiring electrical expertise. Perform other duties assigned by the Project Engineer. 2.0 Qualifications, Skills, and Experience 2.1 Relationship and Alignment Personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Education and Experience National Trade Test Grade III, Malawi TEVET Foundation Certificate, City & Guilds Technician Certificate, or Malawi Craft Certificate in Electrical Installation, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline (Essential). Malawi TEVET Diploma, City & Guilds Higher Technician Diploma, Advanced Malawi Craft Certificate, Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related field (Desirable). Registered with, or eligible to register with, MEI as a craftsperson Minimum of three (3) years of practical experience in electrical installation, maintenance, or industrial electrical systems. Experience with solar photovoltaic systems, motor control systems, generators, water pumping systems, or WASH infrastructure is an advantage. Valid Class B driver’s license Ability to drive manual 4x4 vehicle 2.3 Skills and Abilities Sound knowledge of electrical installations, motor control systems, pumps, generators, solar photovoltaic systems, and electrical distribution networks. Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and engineering specifications. Proficiency in electrical testing, fault diagnosis, and preventive maintenance. Good understanding of electrical safety standards and safe work practices. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to prepare technical reports and maintain accurate project documentation. High level of integrity, accountability, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. Willingness to travel frequently to project locations throughout Malawi. Ability to work safely in workshop and field environments while consistently applying health and safety procedures.
