What is the opportunity?

Under the guidance of the Regional Compliance Director, Africa, the Risk and Compliance Coordinator is responsible for performing risk assessment, compliance audits and setting up monitoring mechanisms for the control environment within Water Mission operations following established standards and procedures. This position requires that the person periodically travels to Water Mission’s Africa Programs including field offices to carry out assessments, compliance audits, inspections, or training. In addition, the Risk and Compliance Coordinator may be requested to conduct virtual audits by videoconference and travel to Water Mission Country Programs in Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Uganda when necessary to conduct compliance audits. This position will be based in Nairobi, but remote candidates in Kenya with strong internet connectivity may be considered.

A successful Senior Compliance and Risk Coordinator will be responsible for the following:

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Regional Compliance Director in developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the Risk and Compliance Strategic Plan for the Africa Region.
  • Work with all the Country Directors, department heads, and senior officers to identify key departmental risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Assist in developing the risk register for Water Mission’s Africa Programs and report on them regularly.
  • Prepare monthly compliance reports on the risk, compliance, and regulatory environment of Africa Country Programs and forward them to the Regional Compliance Director for review and guidance.
  • Develop and monitor Grant Control Matrices for Water Mission’s Africa Programs to ensure compliance with all the donor agreement requirements.
  • Review the policies and procedures of Water Mission’s Africa Programs to ensure compliance with the Group/HQ Global policies.
  • Ensure sufficient controls are set up in all departments to detect and avoid any gaps, breaches, or possible fraud.
  • Assist the Procurement Committee and pre-audit transactions of Africa Programs to ensure that they comply with the requirements of procurement and finance policies and procedures.
  • Follow up on the registration of Water Mission’s Africa Country Programs with all the relevant legal and regulatory bodies that govern the various country programs and enforce adherence to all the appropriate sections, such as the NGO Boards/Bureaus, Data Protection Agencies, Revenue Authorities, National Social Security Funds, Financial Intelligence Authorities, Environment Protection Agencies, etc., to avoid the related penalties.
  • Participate in strategic development meetings and contribute to establishing well-researched, reliable internal controls and monitor adherence to those controls.
  • Track the implementation status of agreed donor and statutory audit recommendations with management, departmental heads, and staff.
  • Prepare and conduct compliance/internal control training for staff on internal controls, risk management, policies and procedures, laws, and regulations based on current trends and standards
  • Carry out scheduled, impromptu, petty cash audits and compliance spot checks as and when the supervisor advises.
  • Assist Africa Country Programs in project proposal development, especially in the Risk Management sections.
  • Provide support in developing program plans, budgets, schedules, and reports of the Africa Country Programs.
  • Carry out any other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor and/or senior management occasionally.

What is required?

  • Strong personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • The ideal applicant must hold a degree from a recognized university in economics, statistics, accounting & finance, business administration, and other relevant fields.
  • Advanced level and/or possession of professional accounting or auditing qualifications such as ACCA, CPA, CISA, or CIA. Membership with the Institute of Internal Auditors and Institute of Certified Public Accountants is desirable.
  • At least five years of experience in internal/ external audit practice, compliance, risk management in a reputable NGO with international setting, commercial organization, or public institution.
  • High computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and practical knowledge in using cloud-based accounting systems.
  • Excellent skills in large data analytics using Excel and other relevant data analysis tools to make sense out of data and report on the findings thereof.
  • Commitment to Continued Professional Development to remain abreast and well-informed regarding professional standards and internal business requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of East Africa tax laws, NGO regulations, and labor laws.
  • Proven track record of integrity and commitment to professional ethics.
  • Attention to detail and strategic thinking style.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to influence and negotiate at all levels of the organization.
  • Capable of working independently and in a team environment and delivering within strict deadlines.
  • Ability to make periodic travels to Water Mission operations in Africa including field offices when called upon.
