What is the opportunity?

Under the guidance of the Country Director, the Lead Engineer supports Water Mission’s vision of providing safe water and an opportunity to share God’s love with all. This position entails providing technical guidance and support to Water Mission Tanzania Engineers and Technicians following Water Mission’s established standards and procedures. This full-time position requires residency in Kasulu, Tanzania. The position might require frequent travel to remote locations within Tanzania and occasionally outside of Tanzania to carry out assessments and to support some of the organization’s technical aspects.

The Lead Engineer is responsible for leading himself/herself. The staff in developing a biblical worldview culture that leads to God-honoring excellence in all work and reinforcing the following: providing accurate data, empowering staff to have the skills and mindset needed to acknowledge mistakes or problems as opportunities to find appropriate solutions, and empowering staff to consistently work for excellence in solutions that are consistent with Water Mission’s mission, vision, values, and standards.

The successful Lead Engineer will:

  • Maintain a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, partners, donors, vendors, charitable beneficiaries, the communities we serve, and the public.
  • Effectively communicate the mission and scope of Water Mission to various audiences.
  • Conduct engineering field work and design according to established engineering principles and standards to high excellence and dependable accuracy.
  • Lead the technical team, oversee, review, and assist Technicians, Volunteers, and other Engineers to ensure output quality and adherence to established standards.
  • Promote, encourage, and model Water Mission’s mission, vision, and values to the technical team members.
  • Train and facilitate a culture of capacity building for team members.
  • Perform Engineering tasks, including water hydraulic design calculations and development of plans, specifications, and structural drawings.
  • Provide onsite project management in support of approved projects.
  • Conduct field inspections and site assessments as needed to ensure that construction is in accordance with design and expectations.
  • Champion and ensure the technical team upholds Water Missions Tanzania’s quality assurance and quality control standards and procedures (QA/QC).
  • Layout and design of water systems, including source, pumping, treatment, storage, and distribution.
  • Ensure that all work, including that of the Lead Engineer, is reviewed by another Engineer as designated by the Country Director.
  • Perform assessments in communities, including water quality and quantity testing, survey measurements, and other aspects as may be required.
  • Ensure timely project reporting, including monthly reports, assessment reports, and follow-up reports with accompanying photographs as per specific assignment guidelines.
  • Provide disaster response support and work in other countries as needed.
  • Other tasks as may be assigned

What is required?

  • Alignment with Water Mission’s Statement of Faith and core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity
  • Personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering – Civil, Chemical, or Mechanical is preferred
  • Experience of at least 5 to 10 years, including leading engineering/technical teams.
  • Driver’s license.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English).
  • A level of impeccable integrity and stewardship demonstrates to those who invest in Water Mission Tanzania a sense of security and trust that their gifts are well used and invested.
  • A strong work ethic.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Must be standards and detail-oriented with the ability to plan.
  • Excellent analytical, process design, and project planning and management skills.
  • Advanced skills with office computer (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and drafting and modeling programs (AutoCAD, EPANET, PowerCADD, SolidWorks, ProE).
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Master’s degree is desirable but can be offset by quality experience
