What is the opportunity?

Under the direction of the WASH Engineer, the Engineering Assistant is responsible for the day-to-day monitoring of the water quality of the systems under his/her jurisdiction in accordance with the WM standards and implementing the hardware components in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program, including operation and maintenance of the existing water systems following established standards and procedures of Water Mission Uganda (WMU). This position is based in the refugee operation in Yumbe or Imvepi Refugees settlement.

This opportunity is a full-time, fixed-contract role.

The Engineering Assistant is responsible for:

General Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, partners, the communities we serve, and the public.
  • Monitoring of water quality in accordance with the WM standards.
  • Operations and maintenance of water systems to supply safe water.
  • Oversee and support system operators to perform their duties.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Implementation of technical aspects of projects according to WM standards.
  • Supervise the construction of masonry, reinforced concrete, and steel structures such as treatment houses, tank bases, tap stands, and solar racks, according to technical drawings and specifications.
  • Installation of water system components, including pumps, filters, chlorinators, solar panels, and solar inverter systems.
  • Conduct field inspections and site assessments as needed under the WASH Engineer’s direction.
  • Maintain regular contact with supervisors and stakeholders through timely reporting.
  • With support from the Engineer, perform engineering tasks, including water hydraulic design calculations and development of plans, specifications, and structural drawings.
  • With guidance from the Engineer conduct engineering fieldwork and design according to the established engineering principles and standards to a high degree of excellence and dependable accuracy.
  • With guidance from the Engineer, conduct water systems’ layout and design, including source, pumping, treatment, storage, and distribution.
  • Perform assessments in communities, including water quality and quantity testing, survey measurements, and other aspects as may be required.
  • Installing storage tanks, distribution lines, and tap stands.
  • Training local system operators on O&M-related interventions.
  • Project reporting, including taking photographs and recording testimonials.
  • Monitor stock levels of water quality consumables with strong adherence to expiry dates and routinely supply the System Operators for continuous field monitoring.
  • Maintain an updated database of water quality interventions and, based on reporting needs, extract appropriate data for routine sharing with stakeholders.
  • In close collaboration with Hygiene promotion staff/team, routinely disseminate water quality results and any related feedback/developments for improving the water chain at the household/community level.
  • Ensure proper scheduling and routine cleaning of all water storage reservoirs in the settlement.
  • Under the guidance of the Engineer, perform risk assessments/sanitary surveys along water supply and distribution chains for gap mapping and strategy formulation.
  • Water quality testing.
  • Water system monitoring, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Provide timely, professional, and courteous communication.
  • Prompt and accurate providing of timesheets, motorcycle and equipment logs, cash advance requests, and receipts.
  • Careful use of equipment, vehicles, and motorcycles. Good stewardship of tools and resources.
  • Conduct and complete assessments in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Representation of Water Mission at sector-related activities in the field.

What is required?

Relationship and Alignment:

  • A personal growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Alignment with Water Mission’s Statement of Faith and core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity.

Education Qualification and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in water/water resources, Civil or Environmental Engineering with Previous Experience implementing water supply works, water supply systems O&M in Humanitarian settings.
  • 3+ years’ Experience in the implementation of water treatment, supply works, and O&M in humanitarian settings with a bias in water quality.
  • Should be willing to reside in West Nile.
  • Holder of a valid Uganda Rider’s/Driver’s Liscence with more than 2 years’ experience riding motorbikes.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in office computer applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Self-starter who solves problems and knows when and how to ask for assistance and counsel.
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good photography and documentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high level of integrity
  • Ability to make field travels to remote locations within Uganda.
  • Legal authorization to work in Uganda.
