Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Officer
Wala
Job Title: Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Officer
Location: Lilongwe, Malawi
Job Type: Full-time
Closing date: 28 September 2025
About Us:
Wala offers solar water pumping systems and accessories to small holder farmers on affordable credit terms. We also offer technical and market linkage support to our customers so they can grow their incomes and improve their livelihoods. Our inclusive business model aims to improve the way low-income stakeholders access energy for increased agricultural productivity.
Job Summary:
We are looking for a highly motivated and detail-oriented Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Officer to design, implement, and manage our monitoring, evaluation and learning systems.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Monitoring & Evaluation
At Wala, our mission is to make solar-powered equipment affordable and accessible to smallholder farmers, enabling them to increase productivity, grow incomes, and improve livelihoods. The MEL Officer will design and implement frameworks that track not only sales and repayment performance, but also customer outcomes and impact in the field. From monitoring how equipment is used to assessing changes in farm output and household income, the officer will ensure that Wala has the evidence it needs to remain both commercially viable and socially impactful.
2. Data Management
Data sits at the core of how Wala delivers value to farmers and sustains its business. The MEL Officer will be responsible for collecting, organizing, and analyzing data across the customer journey — from initial loan approvals to repayment patterns and product performance. They will ensure data is accurate, reliable, and accessible for decision-making, while introducing tools and platforms that make field data collection efficient. Their work will provide insights into customer needs, repayment behavior, and equipment performance in real-world farming conditions.
3. Impact Management
Wala exists to deliver tangible benefits to smallholder farmers. The MEL Officer will measure how access to solar equipment improves farm yields, reduces costs, and increases household incomes. They will track customer satisfaction and capture stories of transformation that show how Wala’s solutions drive livelihood improvements. By systematically measuring impact, the officer will ensure Wala continues to meet its dual mission: enabling farmer prosperity while building a sustainable, credit-driven business model.
4. Internal Learning & Programme Improvement
As a fast-growing social enterprise, Wala is committed to learning and adapting quickly. The MEL Officer will facilitate feedback loops that help product, sales, and credit teams refine their approaches. For example, insights into repayment trends might inform better loan structures, while farmer feedback on equipment performance could guide product development. By embedding a culture of data-driven learning, the officer will help Wala continuously improve customer experience, repayment rates, and long-term impact.
5. Internal and External Knowledge Sharing
The MEL Officer will also ensure that Wala’s insights are shared effectively across teams and with external stakeholders. Internally, this will mean producing clear dashboards, reports, and presentations that keep sales, credit, and leadership teams aligned on progress and challenges. Externally, it may involve preparing investor and donor reports, case studies, or customer impact stories that highlight Wala’s commercial and social value. By doing so, the officer will help Wala strengthen its reputation as a trusted partner to farmers, funders, and the wider renewable energy ecosystem.
Competencies & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Monitoring and Evaluation or related field.
- At least 3 years of experience in monitoring and evaluation. Experience doing MEL in the renewable energy or agriculture sector will be considered an advantage.
- Proven expertise in development of data collection tools, analysis and interpretation, with experience using data visualization tools. Excellent reporting and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex data insights to non-technical stakeholders in multiple local languages.
- Good communication & interpersonal Skills, with excellent verbal and written communication capacities, active listening and facilitation skills as well as high levels of diplomacy & tact.
- An analytical & critical thinker, with a problem-solving mindset, critical questioning and data interpretation skills.

- High levels of ethics and integrity, respects privacy of respondents and sensitive/confidential organisational data. Depicts honesty in reporting and accountability, taking full ownership for data quality and deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail, with excellent methodical and organizational skills. An ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, while remaining accuracy-oriented and simultaneously managing personal and key stakeholder time.
- Excellent storytelling ability, able to turn data into compelling narratives for reports and presentations.
- Good negotiation skills, able to persuade stakeholders to provide timely, accurate data.
- Curiosity, with a genuine drive to understand “why” outcomes happen, not just “what” happened.
- High levels of professionalism
- Self-starter who is able to work well with minimal supervision
