Virunga Power is a renewable energy company focused on creating a new model for the generation and distribution of power in rural sub-Saharan Africa. We invest in, develop, own, and operate renewable energy generation of up to 20 MW and regional electricity distribution projects across East and Southern Africa. We are developing and implementing private utility solutions for countries and communities across sub-Saharan Africa to increase energy access and electrification rates through sustainable financing structures. Headquartered in Mauritius, Virunga Power operates and develops projects in Burundi, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Malawi.

About the Role

Virunga Power is hiring a Compliance Officer on a full time basis to support the Finance Manager and Head of Legal to ensure the companies of the group are compliant with requirements in all the jurisdictions where they operate being Mauritius, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Zambia and Malawi. The successful candidate will possess strong attention to detail, organizational skills and high standards of professionalism and integrity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Compliance Officer will be entrusted with the following duties and responsibilities:

- Prepare reporting dashboards, compliance dashboards, and coordinating across different departments to ensure the compliance actions are performed by the appropriate parties

- Prepare and file annual returns and other corporate administration activities

- Be the point of contact for the company secretaries and certain other external consultants, as directed, that work with the group

- Maintain up to date KYC documents on the companies of group and respond to KYC queries from counterparties

- Perform KYC verification on new investors, suppliers and contractors

- Implement Business Integrity policies

- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of group policies, procedures and controls

- Ensuring proper insurance coverage for the operations of the group

- As requested, support development teams with compliance matters of subsidiary special purpose vehicles, e.g., building compliance schedules for necessary permits and authorizations that require renewals and ensuring such key authorizations do not lapse

- As requested, assist with informational requests and grant applications

Minimum Requirements:

The ideal candidate would have the following skills and credentials:

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a compliance role.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Law, Accounting, Economics, Finance, or similar.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Experience working in a group operating several companies across Africa – especially Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi or Malawi – is a plus.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Commitment to professionalism and high standards of integrity and ethics.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal instruction.

Other:

  • Demonstrated interest in renewable energy, international development, and social impact.
  • Experience working with a Big 4, a Company Secretary or a GBL company in Mauritius would be a plus.
  • Fluency in English and French is required.
  • Residing in the North (Grand Baie area).
  • Willingness to take initiative on proactive problem solving .
