About the role:

UpEnergy is at a time of exciting growth, expanding both in terms of product and geographic portfolio. We are looking for an experienced Carbon Operations Manager who is passionate about our mission and motivated by the challenge to help UpEnergy to manage its carbon operations in Ghana. The Carbon Operations Manager will be responsible for managing carbon activities in Ghana. This will include overseeing the provision of quality control support to data teams to ensure compliance to carbon crediting programs and requirements and providing operational support and leadership on carbon activities in the country.

The ideal candidate would have a proven track record of setting and delivering on goals for high-fidelity data from the field. This role will not only require someone who can manage large team but has a good understanding of carbon offset projects that includes but not limited to conducting baseline studies, field tests, monitoring surveys, impact surveys, reports drafting and assisting verification and validation audits, etc. We’re looking for someone that finds fulfilment and enjoyment in joining a dedicated team of professionals committed to Sustainable Development. Someone who pushes forward initiatives by asking great questions, cutting through ambiguity, and organizing to win. The person would need to be relentlessly detail-oriented, methodical in their approach to understanding trade-offs, place the highest emphasis on progress, and progress quickly while working in a highly functioning team. The incumbent should have good interpersonal and leadership skills and likes conducting research and testing out new ideas.

This role will report to the Carbon Operation Lead and Country Operation Director. The role is a full-time position and based out of UpEnergy Office at Accra, Ghana.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage Carbon Project cycle- Planning; Monitoring, Verification and Validation for all projects that are distributed in the country.
  • Manage planning and execution of baseline studies including field measurements (CCTs, KPTs, WBTs etc.) for technologies that the company would venture in.
  • Conduct stakeholder consultation for any new technologies company would venture in and supports continuous engagement and feedback with different stakeholders in the country.
  • Work with Talent Team and Carbon Operations Lead to plan and hire country staff for carbon operations roles and conduct continuous training of team members for building capacity. Also, conduct capacity building and knowledge transfer sessions with other departments/functions. Plan and execute training of newly hired distribution teams on carbon requirements.
  • Manage relationship with relevant Ministry staff in the country. Actively engage and apprise the Ministry about impacts/activities in the country.
  • Manage and perform quality control activities to assess and validate compliance of distribution data for carbon requirements and share the reports with Data Operation Team for reconciliation. Prepare and share data QC reports and insights to distribution team, global carbon team or other teams on monthly basis.
  • Plan Carbon operations budget with the Carbon Operations Lead and send requests to carry out field activities to Country Finance team and Country Director. Ensure efficient utilization of budgets, reconciliation of plan vs actual budgets and compliance with documentation.
  • Support knowledge management of the carbon projects implemented by the country office, including proper documentation of activities, updating standard operating procedures, project files, technical specifications and ensuring physical filing of documents.
  • Any Support the coordination of other field activities as requested and as guided by management. Activities here may include supporting due diligence exercises, research studies among others.
  • Procure and maintain field testing equipment calibrated for different field tests.

Must Have

  • Relevant Degree.
  • 3+ years of experience in research, data management and carbon offset projects
  • Proven track record of managing a diverse team of officers, associates, Enumerators and External consultants to complete the operational KPIs within the timeline.
  • Experience with improved cookstoves and safe water projects and conducting field tests (WBTs, KPTs, Water Quality Tests)
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and data management tools would be a plus.
  • Prior experience and demonstrated ability in conducting country-wide field surveys which including planning, mobilizing resources, and implementation, adherence to high quality and standards and completion of reports within the stipulated timeline.
  • Development and experience in using web/mobile data capture tools like ONA, ODK Collect, etc. Woking knowledge of Salesforce or similar application would be an added advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written in English and interpersonal skills.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with the development of energy or carbon projects.
  • An understanding of clean energy products, especially cookstoves and water purifiers and its distribution model.
  • Familiarity with local language and Business culture
