About the role:
The Carbon Operations Associate will be responsible for managing and coordinating in-country carbon activities, this will include providing quality control support to data teams to ensure compliance to carbon crediting programs and requirements, and also providing operational support and leadership on carbon activities.
This role will not only require someone who is very organized, capable of managing large datasets but has a good understanding of carbon offset projects, has good interpersonal and leadership skills and likes conducting research, and testing out new ideas.
The Carbon Operations Associate will also have the opportunity to actively participate in key operational projects to advance UpEnergy’s business in Mozambique including, but not limited to, manufacturing, supply chain management, distribution, sales and marketing, retail partnerships, as well as the piloting and launch of new products.
This role will report to the Carbon Operations Lead for Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. The role is based in Maputo, Mozambique.
Key Responsibilities:
- Carbon Project Cycle Management: Oversee the planning, monitoring, verification, and validation of all projects in the assigned countries.
- Manage the rollout and implementation of Impact Assessments for Carbon Projects including, reporting and knowledge transfer for improved project implementation.
- Plan and carry out baseline studies, including field measurements like CCTs, KPTs, and WBTs, for new technologies.
- Conduct consultations for new technologies and maintain ongoing engagement and feedback with stakeholders in the country.
- Collaborate with the Talent Team and Carbon Operations Lead to plan and hire country staff for carbon operations roles, and provide continuous training to enhance team capacity.
- Lead sessions for capacity building and knowledge transfer with other departments/functions, and train newly hired distribution teams on carbon requirements.
- Perform quality control activities to ensure compliance of distribution data with carbon requirements and share reports with the Data Operation Team for reconciliation.
- Provide monthly quality control reports and insights to the distribution team, global carbon team, and other relevant teams.
- Work with the Carbon Operations Lead to plan the carbon operations budget and submit requests for field activities to the Country Finance team and Country Director. Ensure efficient budget utilization, reconcile planned versus actual budgets, and maintain documentation compliance.
- Support the documentation of carbon projects, including updating standard operating procedures, project files, technical specifications, and ensuring proper physical filing of documents.
- Assist in coordinating other field activities as directed by management, including due diligence exercises and research studies.
- Procure and maintain calibrated field testing equipment for various tests.
Must Have
- Relevant Degree.
- 3+ years of experience in research, data management and carbon offset projects (Clean Cooking, Safe Water, Afforestation Projects)
- Proven track record of managing a diverse team of officers, enumerators and external consultants to complete the operational KPIs within the timeline.
- Experience with improved cookstoves, safe water and afforestation projects, and conducting field tests (for example, WBTs, CCTs, KPTs, Water Quality Tests)
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and data management tools would be a plus.
- Prior experience and demonstrated ability in conducting country-wide field surveys including planning, mobilizing resources, and implementation, adherence to high quality and standards and completion of reports within the stipulated timeline.
- Development and experience in using web/mobile data capture tools like ONA, ODK Collect, etc.
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written in English & Portuguese and interpersonal skills.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with the development of energy or carbon projects.
- An understanding of clean energy products, especially cookstoves and water purifiers and its distribution model.
- Familiarity with local language and business culture.
