The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The MIKE Programme was established by the CITES Conference of the Parties to monitor levels of illegal killing of elephants in MIKE sites in elephant range States in Africa and Asia, with the goal of providing reliable information and building capacity for the management of elephant populations. The Programme’s geographical coverage expanded and now includes 100 MIKE sites spread over 47 elephant range States. An additional focus on monitoring the illegal killing of other endangered species will be explored and implemented if feasible. The CITES Secretariat is primarily responsible for the implementation of the MIKE Programme. The Coordination Officer will be responsible for the overall management of the CITES MIKE Programme activities, including implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of its associated projects, and all technical outputs of the program and its financial and operational sustainability. The position is located at the Nairobi duty station.
