Drawing upon material from the Office of the Executive Secretary, substantive units of the Secretariat and partners, reflecting Secretariat priorities in digital conversations; A priority focus will be on social media strategy support and promotion of key events related to the work of the Convention and its Protocols.
Through original posts and retransmission of partner content, coordinates daily outreach on global social media platforms in English and other languages, as appropriate, to increase visibility of the organization’s work and its issues.
The Individual Contractor will assist with the coordination of strategic social media campaigns to communicate the priorities of the Secretariat, especially in relation to the Kunming – Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, UN International Days and campaigns in line with the objectives of the Convention.
Work Location
Montreal duty station (SCBD offices).
Expected duration
Six months.
Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational setting
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is one of the key agreements arising from the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development – meeting our needs while ensuring that we leave a healthy and viable world for future generations. The Convention has 196 Parties and three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources.
The Consultant will work under the supervision of the Information Officer, Communication and Awareness Unit, Office of the Executive Secretary (OES).
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Public Information Officer for the CBD Secretariat.
He/she Will Perform The Following Duties
- Assist with the coordination of the daily outreach on social media platforms, with other Secretariat staff, including the creation of content, to increase visibility of the Convention, the CBD Secretariat’s work, the work and profile of the Executive Secretary and biodiversity issues.
- Assist in the creation of communication products on the main issues under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and its Protocols through research, and drafting of some basic text.
- Assist with the development of social media strategies in line with overall Secretariat communications plans for campaigns, relevant international UN days, meetings of the Secretariat and activities of the Acting Executive Secretary.
- Monitor the success of social media posts based on analytics, and keep up to date on new social media tools and best practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Academic qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Courses in Social sciences, Communication, Marketing is desirable.
Working Experience
A minimum of one year of experience with organizing outreach and social media campaigns, events or international meetings is required.
Proficiency in using new technologies, web-based platforms and social media networks is desirable.
Familiarity with issues related to the Convention on Biological diversity, the UN system and other international sustainable development-related processes is desirable.
Skills
Excellent writing skills and computer skills are required. Experience in Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator (or equivalent), photo and video editing software, social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube is required.
Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work efficiently is required. Enjoy working as a team member as well as independently is required.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is desirable.

CBD Secretariat in Montreal, Canada.
