The Northern Kenya Conservation Intern will support The Nature Conservancy's Northern Kenya conservation program by advancing youth engagement, learning, and participation in community-led conservation initiatives. The intern will work closely with the Kenya team, community conservancies, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs), government agencies, and conservation partners, the intern will contribute to research, stakeholder engagement, knowledge management, and program implementation activities that strengthen conservation and sustainable development outcomes.

The Intern will also help generate insights on youth aspirations, leadership opportunities, and pathways for meaningful participation in conservation while supporting the documentation and dissemination of lessons, success stories, and best practices across Northern Kenya's conservation landscapes. Through field engagement, collaboration with diverse stakeholders, and participation in strategic conservation initiatives, the intern will gain practical experience while contributing to the advancement of inclusive and community-centered conservation approaches.

We’re Looking for You:

The intern will support the implementation of Indigenous and Community-Led Conservation priorities across Northern Kenya. The role provides an opportunity for an early-career conservation professional to gain hands-on experience working with community conservancies, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, youth groups, and conservation practitioners. The intern will contribute to research, learning, stakeholder engagement, program coordination, communications, and knowledge-sharing activities that strengthen youth participation in conservation and natural resource management.

We are looking for an intern who is passionate about conservation and community development, with strong communication and organizational skills, and a demonstrated interest in working with diverse stakeholders across pastoral and conservation landscapes. The intern will contribute to building knowledge and evidence on youth engagement in conservation while supporting program delivery, partnership development, and learning processes that advance equitable and sustainable conservation outcomes.

The position will be based in Nanyuki, Kenya, and will report to the Northern Kenya Conservation Coordinator.

Responsibilities & Scope

· Support implementation of Indigenous and Community-Led Conservation initiatives across Northern Kenya through research, stakeholder engagement, learning, and program support activities.

· Assist with collecting, organizing, analyzing, and synthesizing information on youth engagement, community-led conservation, rangeland management, livelihoods, and related conservation topics.

· Assist to the development of case studies, learning products, reports, presentations, and communication materials that document conservation outcomes and lessons learned.

· Support engagement with community conservancies, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, youth groups, government agencies, and conservation partners to strengthen collaboration and participation.

· Assist in planning and coordinating workshops, meetings, field visits, learning exchanges, and stakeholder consultations.

· Support monitoring, evaluation, and learning activities, including data collection, documentation, analysis, and reporting on project progress and outcomes.

· Learn from the team knowledge management efforts by organizing program information, maintaining databases, and supporting information sharing across teams and partners.

· Participate in field activities to better understand community conservation approaches, youth priorities, and opportunities for sustainable natural resource management.

· Support communications and storytelling initiatives by assisting with content development, interviews, photography, success stories, and outreach materials.

· Assist the Kenya team with project coordination, partner engagement, logistics planning, and administrative support, as required.

· Support the identification, documentation, and dissemination of innovative approaches that enhance youth participation and leadership in conservation.

· Advance already built and help maintain positive working relationships with community members, partners, and colleagues while representing The Nature Conservancy in a professional manner.

What You’ll Bring:

· Bachelor’s degree completed within the last one year (graduated) with 6 months of related experience in Conservation, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Community Development, Social Sciences, Geography, International Development, or a related field.

· Demonstrated interest in conservation, community development, youth engagement, climate resilience, or natural resource management.

· Knowledge of using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and digital collaboration platforms.

· Assist in written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

· Knowledge on how to collect, organize, analyze, and present information effectively.

· Willingness to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment and deliver results

· Willingness and ability to travel and work in remote field locations across Northern Kenya when required.

· Some organizational skills and a assisting to manage multiple assignments while meeting deadlines.

· Must be available full time during the time of internship.
