The Finance Director, Western US and Canada Division, serves as the senior finance leader for an assigned pod of Business Units (BUs) and Division Priorities (DPs) within the Division. The Finance Director provides strategic financial leadership, stewardship, and decision support across the pod while serving as the dedicated finance partner for up to two assigned Business Units and/or Division Priorities. The role leads finance staff within the pod, coordinates finance resources and priorities across multiple Business Units and Division Priorities, and builds trusted partnerships with conservation, philanthropy, operations, and leadership teams. Working in collaboration with Division finance leaders, the Finance Director advances financial sustainability, organizational effectiveness, and consistent financial management practices across the Western US and Canada Division.

The Nature Conservancy is seeking a Finance Director to serve as the senior finance leader for an assigned pod of Business Units and Division Priorities within the Western US and Canada Division. In this role, you will partner with conservation, philanthropy, operations, and leadership teams to support financial planning, stewardship, risk management, and decision-making while leading finance staff and coordinating finance resources across a diverse portfolio of programs and initiatives. The ideal candidate combines strong financial expertise with relationship-building, people leadership, and change management skills and is energized by leading teams, fostering collaboration across functions, and working in a mission-driven organization to advance conservation outcomes and organizational effectiveness.

Pod Structure: The Finance Director will support one of the following pods, as they are currently structured. The pods may evolve over time based on the financial support needs of Business Units and Division Priorities within the Division:

• Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Emerald Edge, Columbia Basin Salmon

• Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Climate and Renewable Energy

• Colorado, WUSCAN Division Office, Colorado River Program, Grasslands, Western Dry Forests

• Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Sagebrush Sea

What You’ll Bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 7 years related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience developing budgets, performing high-level financial analysis, and recommending actions and providing partnership to leadership.

• Experience acting as a consultant/advisor to senior executives.

• Experience recruiting, supervising and developing staff.

• Experience in developing, directing and implementing multiple projects.

• Experience with accounting principles, practices and regulations.

• Experience with GAAP and not-for-profit accounting principles, practices and regulations, including government grants accounting and reporting.

• Experience working with computer and information management systems, Excel spreadsheets and databases for financial analysis, fiscal management, and/or financial reports.

• Experience leading organizational change initiatives and helping teams successfully adapt to evolving priorities, processes, systems, and business needs.

• Experience leading financial services and initiatives across multiple organizational units, business areas, or stakeholder groups.

• Demonstrated ability to serve as a strategic finance partner, build trusted relationships, influence decision-making, and navigate competing priorities with diverse stakeholders.

• Advanced experience in financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, reporting, analysis, and translating financial information into actionable insights and recommendations.

• Demonstrated success analyzing complex financial information, identifying risks and opportunities, developing solutions, and supporting strategic decision-making.

• Experience working with federal grants, government regulations, contracts, and other restricted funding sources.

• Experience with enterprise financial systems, including prior experience with Workday or similar ERP systems.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex financial concepts to technical and non-financial audiences.

• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex, mission-driven environment.

• Experience working in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary, or geographically dispersed organization.

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $105,500 - 137,000 annually. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
