JOB TITLE: Principal Engineer
REPORTS TO: Head of Engineering
LOCATION: Johannesburg
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BSc Eng (Electrical)
- Pr.Eng (Electrical)
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- PV system modelling(PVsyst, PVSOL and similar)
- Design of PV systems in CAD
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
- Problem solver
- Capable of mentoring young engineers
- Innovative and adaptable
- Independent thinker and worker
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Minimum 10 years Electrical Engineering
- Minimum 5 years are in Solar PV Industry
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design and Analysis:
- Scope sites, run simulations, develop CAD layouts, and single line diagrams for solar PV systems
- Communicate designs to draughting department
- Present designs for the construction department
- Remain abreast of industry trends and technological advancements and seek to incorporate these in designs
- Assist Operations and Maintenance in troubleshooting underperformance of PV plants
Design and process review:
- Review of engineering deliverables including models, drawings, calculations, specifications, reports, evaluations etc. developed by other engineers including but not limited to NRS097, SANS 10142 and Eskom RETEC.
- Assume responsibility for designs as the Professional Engineer who approves and signs off technical correctness of designs
- Provide technical insight and mentorship to engineers in relation to design quality, schedule and budget
- Identify and manage continuous improvement activities within the department including the maintenance of company standards and procedures
- Ensure systems are OSH compliant for long term operations and contribute to risk assessment processes.
- Provide solutions to engineering problems
Mentoring and Management of Young Engineers:
- Coach graduate engineers all aspects of designing and project managing solar PV plants to successful completion
- Assist other engineers to balance demands of time and budget
- Monitor the progress and performance of discipline team members
- Give input and provide feedback and support to other engineers where necessary
- Guide other engineers towards applying for and becoming professionally registered with ECSA and other CPD related activities.
