JOB TITLE: Lead IR Officer

REPORTS TO: Chief Human Resource Officer

LOCATION: Johannesburg

PURPOSE:

  • Effectively and efficiently manage employee relations within Terra Firma

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-year tertiary qualification in HR/ER Labour Management or related field
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in labour relations

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with labour legislation
  • Collective agreements and CCMA proceedings

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Minimum 4 years’ experience as a Labour Specialist

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively consult and advise line managers on labour matters and labour compliance
  • Liaise with the Department of Employment and Labour (DoEL), NBCEI, bargaining councils, union officials, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Represent the company during union engagements, employee consultations, labour negotiations, and proactively manage conflict resolution
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all union-related matters, including the resolution of queries, facilitation of meetings, and collective bargaining processes
  • Lead all labour-related consultations across the business, including consultations required in terms of retrenchments, restructuring, disciplinary processes, and project-specific staffing
  • Lead the recruitment and onboarding of community workers for new projects, ensuring compliance with labour regulations and community agreements
  • Conduct grievance hearings, disciplinary enquiries, employee counselling sessions, and provide procedural and substantive guidance
  • Advise and assist with strike management and contingency measures
  • Manage and submit exemption applications as required under relevant bargaining council agreements
  • Support internal dispute resolution processes and mediate conflict where appropriate
  • Provide oversight and ensure consistent application of disciplinary processes and policies
  • Represent the company in conciliation and arbitration matters at the CCMA, NBCEI, or relevant forums
  • Interpret and apply the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Labour Relations Act (LRA), NBCEI provisions, Sectoral Determinations, and other applicable agreements
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all Industrial Relations (IR) matters and transactions on the SAGE system
  • Required to travel to various sites as needed to support IR-related matters, consultations, and operational requirements
