JOB TITLE: Grid Integration Engineer

REPORTS TO: Head of Engineering

LOCATION: Johannesburg-with local and international travel as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or related fields
• Professionally registered with ECSA
• 7+ years' experience in power systems engineering and grid integration, with a focus on renewable energy sources

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:

• Proven experience with grid codes, power system analysis and the integration of renewables into both national and private grids
• Extensive experience working for or with Eskom in grid operations and grid integration.
• Substation design and protection
• Proficiency in power system simulation tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD, ETAP and DigSILENT PowerFactory.
• Strong understanding of RETEC requirements and NRS 097 standards.
• Strong interpersonal skills with a proven track record of managing client relationships and stakeholder engagements.
• Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple complex technical challenges.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Development:

• Provide detailed technical inputs during the pre-development phase of renewable energy projects, including the evaluation of grid integration options and renewable energy technologies.
• Lead the preparation of cost estimates and budgets for grid integration projects.
• Collaborate with the project teams to develop comprehensive bid packages, ensuring all technical aspects are accurately reflected in project tenders and contracts.
• Conduct in-depth feasibility studies to assess the technical and financial viability of renewable energy projects, focusing on grid connection strategies and CAPEX/OPEX models.
• Perform Grid Impact Assessments and Grid code compliance of grid connection capacity.
• Electrical designs including substation design, distribution and transmission systems.
• Identify potential technical risks related to grid integration, power delivery and system performance.
• Work closely with vendors and suppliers to gather detailed pricing information and technical specifications for key components such as switchgear, transformers and inverters.
• Work with Business Development teams to assist clients to assess their energy needs and develop custom grid integration solutions.
• Engage with clients and other key stakeholders to present technical and financial insights on project viability and cost structures of grid integration strategies.

Project Execution

• Design, develop, and oversea the implementation of solutions integrating renewable energy sources chiefly solar and BESS into the national power grid.
• Ensure compliance with the requirements for grid impact studies and feasibility assessments for renewable energy projects.
• Optimize grid performance and ensure grid stability while integrating intermittent renewable energy sources.
• Develop and maintain internal grid connection standards, ensuring compliance with South African grid codes and RETEC and other relevant requirements.
• Implement advanced grid technologies such as microgrids and hybrid systems to improve reliability and efficiency.
• Oversee the installation, commissioning, and testing of infrastructure ensuring seamless integration with existing systems.
• Innovate new solutions for grid integration and energy delivery.
• Provide technical leadership to the wider engineering team, offering guidance on grid integration challenges and technical matters.

Grid and Regulatory Compliance

• Engage with Eskom and local municipalities to ensure grid compliance and address any technical challenges
• Build and maintain strong relationships with Eskom, local municipalities, clients and industry stakeholders
• Ensure all projects comply with relevant South African and international grid standards and regulations.
• Collaborate with regulatory bodies including NERSA and Eskom to obtain necessary permits and approvals for grid connection.
• Lead the development and implementation of safety protocols in line with SANS and other applicable standards.
• Represent the company during testing and commissioning by regulatory authorities.
