Title: Country Director, Tanzania

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer

Location: Tanzania (Arusha)

The Country Director, Tanzania is a member of the Leadership Team for Solar Sister, Inc. and works closely with the COO and members of the Leadership Team to achieve the overall vision, mission and objectives of Solar Sister.

Specifically, the Country Director has the overall responsibility for the strategic leadership and direction of the Solar Sister program in Tanzania to achieve the organizational vision, mission and objectives. The Country Director is responsible for the programmatic and operational management in Tanzania. S/he represents Solar Sister with Government, Local and international Organizations in Tanzania.

The Country Director is responsible for developing new programming initiatives and new partnerships and, maintaining existing partnerships, and actively leading key phases of ongoing programs and activities. S/he is responsible for the overall financial and human resources management of operations in Tanzania.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Leadership

· Develop and implement strategic plans that meet business goals and impact goals and objectives created in partnership with the COO

· Proactively address challenges in the internal and external environment to protect business interests

Provide Executive Leadership

· Maintain and communicate clear vision

· Mission keeper – set the tone and keep the focus on impact

· Develop and oversee implementation of services, programs and projects within budget that support and advance vision, mission and goals

Financial & Legal leadership

· Ensure commitment to and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations across the organization

· Ensure financial performance and viability of Solar Sister Tanzania

· Develop and propose for COO and CEO’s approval annual operating budget and work plan

Oversee and implement:

· Human Resources: Recruit, hire, develop and support a team of senior leaders to manage critical business functions in Tanzania

· Finance – oversight & ultimate responsibility for Solar Sister Tanzania operating budget and expenditures

· Operations – oversight & ultimate responsibility for Solar Sister Tanzania operations

· Development – work in partnership with Solar Sister Development and Grants Management team to develop funding resources and meet the obligations thereto including all implementation and reporting agreements.

External relationships:

· Serve as Solar Sister ambassador

· Identify and cultivate relationships to build collaborative partnerships with local and national government partners, donors, stakeholders, and the public

Culture:

· Support and continually strengthen Solar Sister’s culture of impact-focused, inclusivity, creativity, data-driven innovation, leadership, responsiveness, and accountability, kindness.

· Create a culture of transparency, accountability and communication throughout the organization

Other duties as required:

Understand our model

· Solar Sister is a social enterprise operating a hybrid model. We’re a nonprofit organization with a business-minded approach, i.e., we use a commercial strategy to achieve social impact.

Professional & Academic Qualifications

  • At least seven years of full-time professional experience in energy, women’s economic empowerment or international development in Tanzania
  • Minimum of Advanced Degree from any recognized institution
  • Master’s level degree, equivalent, or higher, in sustainability, renewables procurement, environment, economics, engineering, geography, or energy-related discipline will be a plus
  • Excellent time management, organization, entrepreneurship, and drive
  • Demonstrated initiative and accomplishment in previous work.
  • Flexibility and willingness to do a wide range of tasks
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Travel required within Tanzania up to 30% of time – Office is based in Arusha, Tanzania (Solar Sister will not cover relocation costs from other areas)
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Swahili

Compensation

Annual Gross Salary of between 80,000,000 and 100,000,000 TSHs in addition Solar Sister offers a generous benefits package, 20 days of PTO, 2 week office closure in December, and a flexible work environment. (candidates will typically start at lower end of salary range).
