A Snapshot of Your Day

Gas turbine axial compressors are designed to operate across a wide range of load and ambient conditions. To meet these demands, the rotor blades in the front stages are optimized to maximize performance, resulting in highly three-dimensional geometries operating under high loading conditions. This increases the risk of both synchronous and non-synchronous vibration issues.

This project aims to investigate how a representative medium gas turbine transonic compressor blade can be scaled to fit the rotating rapid testing rig in the New Whittle Laboratory of Cambridge University. The work must study the impact of scaling on aerodynamic, structural dynamic and aeroelastic properties of the stage. Approaches to minimize the impact of scaling will be investigated. The second part of the project will study the rotating test rig design and will outline the required hardware modifications scope. Together with the test laboratory design team the student will outline the capital and time costs to re-fit the rig to the scaled transonic compressor stage.

The results of this study will provide valuable insight of the relevance of the new test facilities at the Whittle Laboratory, specifically to the medium gas turbine transonic compressor stages of Siemens Energy.

The work can be carried out by one person or by a two-person team.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • M.Sc. student with mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, engineering physics or similar.
  • Experience and interest in using CFD tools (e.g., CFX, STAR-CCM+, TRACE)
  • Programming skills in Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Experience with solid mechanics, structural dynamics and FEM is an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently, but not afraid of asking questions to move forward in your work
  • Structured and clear communicator.
  • Interest in turbomachinery and aeroelasticity.

What You Bring

  • Conduct a comprehensive literature review to explore compressor test rig design and scaling.
  • Develop CFD and FEM models to numerically estimate the relevance of scaled designs.
  • Perform a parametric study to assess the tradeoffs between aerodynamics, structural dynamics and aeroelasticity.
  • Analyze NCCP rotating rig design and required hardware modification scope.
  • Prepare a comprehensive technical report detailing the methodology, results, and conclusions, and deliver a presentation to facilitate discussion and critical evaluation of the outcomes.
