Siemens Energy AB, in collaboration with Linköping University, is offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated candidate to join a four-year industrial PhD project. The project focuses on developing advanced lifetime models for thermal barrier coatings (TBC). It offers a unique chance to conduct cutting-edge research with direct industrial relevance, contributing to the next generation of high-efficiency gas turbine technologies.

Thermal barrier coatings are critical to the performance, efficiency, and durability of modern gas turbines. The aim of the project is to develop predictive lifetime models that improve the understanding of TBC degradation mechanisms under real operating conditions. The work will combine literature studies, planning and evaluation of experimental investigations, analysis of material and coating performance data, and the development of modelling approaches to establish robust methods for assessing coating lifetime.

As an industry-employed PhD student, you will be a full-time employee of Siemens Energy from day one. You will pursue your PhD studies as part of your role,and continue your career within the company after completing the PhD. You will join the R&D Turbine Rotor Mechanical Integrity (MI) team and work closely with colleagues in the Combustor MI team. The primary work location will be Finspång, with regular presence at Linköping University, typically one to two days per week. Depending on project needs and work activities, occasional remote work will also be possible.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Develop and validate predictive lifetime models for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) used in gas turbine applications
  • Plan and evaluate experimental investigations, including material testing, coating characterization, and degradation analysis
  • Collaborate with Siemens Energy and Linköping University researchers, communicate results, and contribute to scientific publications and technical reports

What You Bring

  • Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related discipline
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex material behaviour into predictive models
  • Experience with computational modelling, data analysis or experimental research is considered an advantage
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, with the ability to present technical results clearly

About the Team

The R&D Turbine Rotor MI team is an experienced team with different backgrounds and responsibilities, and engages in a variety of tasks, including FE analysis, alloy development, constitutive modelling, methodology development, and providing support to workshops, procurement, and service. We strive to support each other and build a strong technical knowledge within the team. We are committed to developing long-term competencies and seek individuals who are looking to grow with us.
