A Snapshot of Your Day
Your day centres on producing the design deliverables that turn a customer requirement into something buildable, testable and traceable: schematics, interface packs, design calculations and supporting documentation. Your work typically spans concept and basic design through to detailed documentation, coordinating with suppliers and project stakeholders along the way. You will work closely with Protection & Control and Substation Automation engineers to keep the overall solution coherent, and you will support technical discussions and design reviews with customers and internal stakeholders, so clear communication and a professional, customer-facing manner are important.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Championed digitalisation and continuous improvement by streamlining engineering processes, enhancing quality, and implementing new tools, templates, and ways of working.
- Led technical design reviews for secondary design packages, provided engineering governance oversight, and mentored less experienced engineers.
- Developed and implemented infrastructure governance frameworks while ensuring compliance with standards, customer specifications, and engineering requirements.
- Delivered detailed secondary design solutions for substations and grid connection projects, including protection and control schematics, AC/DC systems, interface packs, and associated documentation.
- Coordinated multidisciplinary technical interfaces and collaborated with Protection & Control, Automation, suppliers, and customers to ensure safe, efficient, and integrated project delivery.
- Supported projects from bid and concept stages through delivery by providing technical input, managing design safety and hazard reviews, addressing customer clarifications, and ensuring constructability and maintainability considerations.
What You Bring
- Leads by example on quality and documentation discipline and is comfortable taking technical ownership of decisions with limited oversight.
- Comfortable adopting new digital tools and engineering workflows, and willing to help shape how the team works as processes evolve.
- Degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience in substation secondary design, electrical design, or control and protection design documentation.
- Proven understanding of secondary systems for substations, including protection schemes, interlocking, signalling, AC and DC supplies, interfaces and design documentation.
- Expert in Electrical CAD (ECAD) design suites for industrial control panels, protection schemes or substations.
- Awareness of IEC/ANSI standards, British standards, customer specifications and quality requirements relevant to substation secondary design.
- Ability to interpret customer specifications and convert them into clear engineering deliverables.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to contribute in customer-facing and cross-functional discussions.
- A disciplined approach to checking, quality, documentation and design coordination.
