Position Title: Technical Specialist
A Snapshot of Your Day
As a Project Technical Specialist, you will play a critical role in the successful execution of grid technology projects across South Africa. You will act as the technical authority for high-voltage switchgear and power transformers, ensuring seamless coordination between engineering, manufacturing, and site activities.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to ensure technical compliance, quality, and performance throughout the project lifecycle from design to commissioning and final handover.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Coordinate and review engineering deliverables, including single-line diagrams, general arrangement drawings, and protection & control schemes
- Ensure technical accuracy of transformer specifications (ratings, losses, cooling systems) and HV switchgear configurations
- Manage interfaces between primary equipment, protection & control systems, SCADA, and auxiliary systems
- Ensure compliance with international standards (IEC, IEEE) and utility requirements
- Support and/or lead Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), including review of procedures, results, and non-conformities
- Ensure all quality, safety, and performance requirements are met prior to equipment shipment
- Provide technical support during installation, Site Acceptance Tests (SATs), and commissioning activities
- Support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of technical issues on-site
- Ensure safe energization and successful project handover to the customer
- Act as the key technical interface between customers, project teams, suppliers, and subcontractors
- Participate in technical meetings, design reviews, and customer discussions
- Support change management by evaluating technical variations and their impact
- Identify and mitigate technical risks throughout the project lifecycle
- Ensure compliance with HSE, quality standards, and corporate governance requirements
- Support preparation of technical documentation for audits and project close-out
What You Bring
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred) or equivalent experience
- Minimum 10 years of experience in HV substations, switchgear, or power transformer projects
- Proven experience in project execution within grid technology, utilities, OEM, or EPC environments
- Hands-on experience with FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities (mandatory)
- Strong technical knowledge of :
- HV switchgear (AIS, GIS, hybrid)
- Power transformers (design, losses, cooling, testing)
- Substation design and integration
- Protection, control, and auxiliary systems
- Familiarity with IEC, IEEE standards and utility specifications
- Experience with digital substations or grid modernization is a plus
