We’re on the lookout for an experienced Quality Control Inspector to manage and coordinate all activities involved with quality inspection of mechanical equipment of the Mill, which has been purchased or repaired internally and externally.

As a Quality Control Inspector, you will be responsible for:
- To ensure that all mechanical equipment components repaired by the Saiccor Workshop and external Suppliers are inspected and tested to specified standards and drawings before dispatching equipment to stores or plant
- Compile equipment specific QCP’s (Quality Control Plan), with detailed sequential inspection points per make, model, and size, and include all inspection tolerances and test requirements by using the Sappi-approved QCP format and specified standards and drawings relevant to each specific type of equipment
- Submit QCP to Workshop Maintenance Superintendent and Plant Engineer to include their critical inspection interventions and ensure that QCP is signed off as approved by both parties. Include relevant inspection intervention points (Hold, Witness, Review, or Verification) and submit for review and approval by the responsible parties
- To ensure conformance with drawing specifications, size, and material specifications, and to communicate noncompliance to Engineering or Production and agree on modifications or equivalents
- Dimensionally inspect all component actual sizes in accordance with specified drawings and/or standards and specifications by using calibrated measuring equipment (micrometers, verniers, etc) and recording the actual measurements on the equipment-specific QCP, including checking runout on rotating elements with the use of using clock gauges
- To ensure that all components stripped by the Workshop fitters or external suppliers conform to specified standards before assembly
- Inspect all pump and fan impellers, including housings, by using the DYE PEN SYSTEM, so that all cracks and floors can be detected
- Inform the workshop Foreman / Workshop Engineer as to defects found during the inspection of components after inspecting components and detecting faults or defects.
- Calibration of all measuring equipment and instruments used by the mechanical workshop. Measuring instruments to be checked against test pieces and recorded in a Measuring Equipment Calibration Register, or to be out for calibration by an accredited vendor, returning instruments with test certificates, which need to be filed in relevant measuring equipment files
- To ensure that engineering drawings and specifications are updated and revised when required
- Red-lined drawings and updated specifications to be submitted to the Workshop Manager, Plant Engineer, or Maintenance Superintendent for approval by means of their signature .
- Obtain necessary documentation from the engineering assistant regarding the job, and then return it with a completed check sheet received from suppliers
- Return passed or rejected items to stores after inspection. All inspected items get a stick-on tag that indicates rejected or passed before it leaves the quality inspection area
- When any task is performed, it must be evaluated, and all safety requirements must be followed with the use of required PPE and maintained safety, including good housekeeping
- To ensure all mechanical components purchased by Sappi Saiccor conform to the originator's requirements on stock or direct purchases
- To compile all inspection and test documentation into an equipment-specific Data Pack and submit for filing and archiving
- To perform standby duties as per the required Workshop schedules
- To ensure all precision measuring equipment is calibrated as per SAP schedules
- To take measurements in the mill when required by any section in the plant
- Perform standby duties as the Foreman as per the cycle
- Perform QC duties on the Stores components and the Plant, as and when required
What are we looking for?
- Grade 12 / N3 or equivalent NQF 4
- Trade tested – ( preferably Fitter and Turner)
- 8 – 10 years’ experience as an artisan in a heavy manufacturing environment
- Experience as a QC Inspector will be advantageous
