Financial Accountant – Accounts Payable | M-KOPA Uganda
You're precise. You're reliable. The AP ledger closes on time because of you, and the vendors trust that when they send an invoice, it will be handled correctly. You've built a reputation for accuracy in a function that most people only notice when something goes wrong.
But here's the question worth sitting with: are you operating at the edge of what's possible — or have you mastered your current environment so thoroughly that it's starting to feel like routine?
At M-KOPA, accounts payable isn't overhead. It's infrastructure.
M-KOPA has extended over $2 billion in credit to customers who had never previously accessed formal financial services. We now serve 7 million customers across Africa, 86% of whom report a meaningful improvement in their quality of life since joining — up from 79% just a year ago. We've assembled 2 million smartphones in Kenya, financed more than 4,000 e-motorbikes saving riders an average of $5.62 every single day, and contributed $45 million in taxes to the economies where we operate.
None of that happens without clean, controlled, well-executed financial operations at the entity level. Every vendor paid on time. Every invoice matched. Every reconciliation completed before the books close.
That's the environment this role operates in — and why it matters more than it might appear on paper.
Why this moment matters
You may have noticed M-KOPA advertising across multiple functions simultaneously. That's not coincidence. We're in the middle of a deliberate, infrastructure-building expansion — scaling from 5 million customers to 7 million, and building toward 10 million. That growth requires financial operations that are airtight across every entity, including our Uganda operations (MKUG and MUGS), where this role sits.
The Financial Accountant – AP owns the full accounts payable cycle across both Ugandan entities. Not a slice of it. All of it — from inbox management and three-way matching through payment execution, bank reconciliations, treasury inputs, and month-end close. You'll work directly with the Senior Financial Controller, giving you both clear ownership and a strong development relationship.
What this role actually involves
Day-to-day, you're the first line of control on the AP cycle. You manage the invoice queue, enforce three-way matching, and resolve discrepancies directly with vendors or internal requestors — escalating only what genuinely requires it. You prepare the weekly vendor payment forecast and maintain a live tracker of outstanding obligations so the Senior Financial Controller always has a current, accurate picture.
Month-end is where discipline shows. You own accruals for your assigned areas — proactively engaging cost centre managers ahead of close to surface unposted commitments before they become a problem. You don't wait for information to come to you; you go and get it. Every balance sheet reconciliation — trade payables, accruals, prepayments — is resolved and clean before it goes upward for review.
On the treasury side, you contribute AP and payment obligation inputs to the weekly Rolling Cash Forecast, reconcile bank accounts daily across both Uganda entities, and flag liquidity concerns early enough for action.
And throughout all of it — including audit — your files are organised, your documentation is complete, and your controls are consistently applied. Audit-ready isn't a once-a-year mode here; it's simply how you work.
What you bring
A completed or in-progress CPA qualification, supported by a degree in accounting, finance, or business administration, and demonstrable hands-on experience across the full AP cycle — from invoice processing through payment execution and month-end close.
Proven working knowledge of ERP systems, three-way matching processes, and AP internal controls, with the accuracy and discipline to maintain a clean ledger under volume and deadline pressure.
Demonstrated ability to manage vendor relationships with professionalism — handling queries, resolving disputes, and maintaining trust — while enforcing controls without compromise.
The reality of the role
This is a high-volume, high-accuracy position. The standards are uncompromising because the stakes are real — cash flow, vendor relationships, audit integrity, and the reliability of financial reporting across two entities all depend on this function being done well. If you're energised by that kind of accountability rather than daunted by it, you're probably in the right conversation.
M-KOPA is a Certified B Corporation. The work here is measured against standards most finance teams never encounter — social, environmental, and governance performance alongside financial results. That shapes the culture, the expectations, and ultimately, what it means to do this job well.
If you're looking for a role where the numbers actually matter beyond the ledger — where your accuracy contributes to an organisation changing how financial access works across Africa — let's talk.
