Consultancy for Survey Implementer to Conduct Midline Household Survey in Kenya

Quantitative Study to Collect Midline Household Quantitative Data on Multifunctional Landscapes Science Program

Background

This quantitative research study is part of ongoing impact evaluation activities under the CGIAR Multifunctional Landscapes Science Program, which integrates and builds upon previous work conducted under the Nature-Positive Solutions initiative.

The study aims to assess changes over time in agricultural practices, livelihoods, and welfare outcomes associated with the adoption of sustainable, agroecological, and nature-positive agricultural practices.

The present assignment concerns the midline survey, which follows a previously implemented baseline survey. The midline will revisit the same households to generate panel data and enable rigorous impact evaluation.

The survey will collect updated information on:

· Agricultural practices and adoption of sustainable, agroecological, and nature-positive solutions

· Household economic outcomes (production, income, assets)

· Food consumption and dietary diversity

· Labor allocation and livelihood strategies

· Gender roles and intra-household decision-making

· Exposure to shocks and resilience

Statement of Work

The selected firm will be responsible for coordinating and conducting a face-to-face midline quantitative survey among farming households in selected counties in Kenya (in Kisumu and Vihiga).

The survey will consist of in-person interviews (approximately 90–120 minutes) conducted using computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI).

The midline survey will target approximately 1,000 households previously interviewed at baseline, requiring strong capacity in panel tracking and re-contacting respondents.

IFPRI will be responsible for:

· Survey instrument design

· Provision of baseline identifiers for tracking

The work will be implemented in coordination with the CGIAR Multifunctional Landscapes Science Program Kenya team. All data should be collected by June 1, 2026.

The activities of the survey implementer are detailed as follows:

Survey Preparation

· Review and adapt the existing baseline CAPI instrument for midline implementation

· Translate survey instrument into relevant local languages

· Update and test the CAPI program (including consistency checks with baseline variables)

· Prepare a panel tracking protocol using baseline household identifiers

Permits and Approvals

· Obtain all necessary research permits, ethics approvals, and local authorizations

Enumerator Recruitment and Training

· Recruit qualified enumerators (male and female) with relevant language skills

· Conduct enumerator training (approximately 5 days), including:

o Panel tracking procedures

o Handling respondent attrition and replacements (if applicable)

o Use of CAPI tools

· Conduct pilot testing (2 days) and revise instruments accordingly

Fieldwork Implementation

· Track and re-interview baseline households using provided identifiers

· Maintain detailed logs of:

o Successfully recontacted households

o Non-response and attrition cases

o Replacement protocols (only if explicitly approved by IFPRI)

· Develop and implement a detailed fieldwork schedule

· Provide regular progress updates to IFPRI

Data Quality Assurance

· Develop spot- and back-check protocols and share these with IFPRI for feedback prior to the start of data collection

· Share monitoring data with IFPRI on a rolling basis

· Participate in regular coordination meetings with IFPRI

Data Management and Delivery

· Upload raw CAPI data regularly during fieldwork

· Conduct data cleaning, including:

o Consistency checks across baseline and midline

o Range and logical checks

· Provide:

o Raw datasets (during fieldwork)

o Cleaned datasets (final, Stata format)

o Do-files for data cleaning

· Ensure translation of open-ended responses into English

Reporting

· Submit a brief fieldwork report, including:

o Survey implementation summary

o Attrition analysis

o Data quality issues and resolutions

o Lessons learned

Period of performance: April 27, 2026 to July 31, 2026.
