Globeleq is a leading independent power producer operating and developing power projects in Africa. In Zambia, Globeleq Energy Zambia Limited (GEZL) has been appointed as the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) provider for the 27 MWp Lunsemfwa Solar PV Plant, owned by Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company Limited (LHPC). The plant is located at Lunsemfwa in the Kapiri District of Central Province, evacuates power via a 66 kV step-up substation and is targeting Commercial Operation Date (COD) on 26 June 2026.

The Electrical Technician is responsible for all preventive and corrective electrical maintenance on the solar plant while ensuring all HSE procedures are followed. The Electrical Technician leads the technician team in maintaining maximum availability and performance ratio of the plant, drafts technical reports on all events, conducts root-cause analysis and identifies and implements plant optimisation projects under the guidance of the Site O&M Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

1. Plan, prepare for, manage and execute Preventive Maintenance activities on the solar plant, ensuring all HSE procedures are followed. Activities include but are not limited to:
  • 66 kV / 33 kV substation maintenance as per the annual maintenance schedule
  • Inverter station maintenance as per the annual maintenance schedule
  • String Combiner Box (SCB) maintenance as per the annual maintenance schedule
  • Weather Monitoring Station (WMS) maintenance as per the annual maintenance schedule
  • Soil Monitoring System maintenance as per the maintenance schedule
  • Infrared (IR) scans of PV modules, SCBs, transformers and inverters
  • Scheduled inspections of the substation, Auxiliary Control Rooms, SCBs, WMS and SMS
  • Inspect, test, diagnose and maintain the CCTV and security system
2. Plan, prepare for, manage and execute Corrective Maintenance activities on the solar plant, ensuring all HSE procedures are followed. Activities include but are not limited to:
  • Respond to all alarms triggered on the solar plant
  • Resolve all trips on the solar plant as soon as possible
  • Attend to all breakdowns; perform fault finding/root-cause analysis and resolve, fix or replace faulty equipment with minimal energy loss
  • Diagnose and replace faulty PV panels
  • Diagnose, test, repair and/or replace cables, cable inter-connections, PV junction/string boxes, connectors and fuses in PV systems
  • Diagnose, test, repair and/or replace transformers
  • Diagnose, test, repair and/or replace 66 kV HV yard equipment
  • Diagnose, repair and/or replace switchgear and control gear in PV systems
3. Apply root-cause analysis techniques on all major and recurring faults
4. Investigate technical failures and prepare formal technical reports
5. Generate Work Order (WO) requests for onsite intervention in the CMMS (IFS or equivalent)
6. Enforce HSE compliance with contractors in line with the Zambia Occupational Health and Safety Act and GEZL HSE Management System
7. Work with the Site O&M Engineer on plant optimisation (reliability and future CAPEX projects)
8. Perform standby duties
9. Train and mentor General Technicians and Interns
10. Interact with the Network Operator's Control Centre (ZESCO / LHPC NCC, as applicable) and Energy Regulation Board (ERB) as required
11. Prepare Requests for Quotation (RFQs) as needed
12. Record-keeping and management of spare-part movements in the CMMS
13. Report significant events to the Site O&M Engineer and Site Manager
14. Any other duties, as assigned by the Site O&M Engineer or Site Manager, in line with the role

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Able to troubleshoot and analyse data including following various types of process charts, schematics and single-line diagrams
  • Good understanding of integrated systems and how to apply effective fault-finding techniques in such systems
  • Very good written and oral communication skills
  • Well-organised and responsive in all communications including clear, concise emails; adept at writing technical reports and procedures
  • Good team player; able to balance team and individual responsibilities
  • Able to manage stress and high-pressure situations
  • Able to handle multiple work-streams, prioritise work and work effectively under limited supervision

Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering required; Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is an advantage
  • Registration with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) at Engineering Technologist or Engineering Technician level (or eligible for immediate registration)
  • Valid Wireman's Licence / appropriate ERB electrical authorisation is an advantage
  • Minimum four (4) years' utility-scale power-plant or industry experience
  • Experience in switching LV, MV and HV systems up to 66 kV is required
  • Experience with lock-out / tag-out (LOTO) procedures
  • Working knowledge of power-system protection
  • SCADA: able to analyse data, investigate and report on trends
  • Knowledge of/experience in SCADA, automation and process-control systems
  • General ERP/CMMS experience (IFS or similar)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • A valid Zambian light-vehicle driver's license is required
  • Able to read and interpret single-line diagrams and schematics
  • Demonstrated experience in the maintenance of LV and 33 kV cable, including DC cable systems, fault location and diagnostics is an advantage
  • Working knowledge of PV plants is an advantage
  • Cable jointing qualifications and experience is an advantage
  • PLC troubleshooting and maintenance is an advantage
  • Working knowledge of the Zambia ERB Grid Code and the Zambia Occupational Health and Safety Act is an advantage
  • Zambian citizenship or valid right to work in the Republic of Zambia is required
