With nearly 1500MW of generation capacity in operation across 14 power plants in 6 countries, 760MW in construction or near operation and >2000MW in development, Globeleq is one of the largest independent power producers solely focused in Africa. Globeleq is 70% owned by British International Investment and 30% by Norfund, the development finance institutions of the UK and Norway, and has a proven track record for supporting the ongoing development of the African power sector.

Globeleq’s various generation technologies include gas, wind, solar PV, battery energy storage (BESS), and geothermal sources. The company is also actively pursuing new opportunities which are emerging from the energy transition, including desalination projects powered by renewables, as well as green hydrogen and ammonia projects.

In this role, the Financial Accountant is responsible for ensuring that the accounting and financial reporting for Globeleq managed operating power plants are maintained accurately and timeously. This role will partner with the operations team to drive performance and efficiency of the power plants.

Key Responsibilities

1. Prepare and Manage transactional and reporting processes:
  • Complete all calculations and capture necessary month end entries including accruals, tax, deferred tax, intercompany transactions, etc.
  • Invoicing of revenue and preparation of monthly entries
  • Maintain fixed asset registers, including creation of new assets and disposals and advising operational team of spend against budget
  • Prepare balance sheet and key income statement reconciliations
  • Prepare and present the finance inputs and analysis for monthly shareholder and stakeholder reports and board reports including explanations of key variances
  • Complete year-end packs
  • Responsible for completion and filing of tax returns including VAT, Income Tax, WHT, etc.
2. Cash Flow Management:
  • Partner with operations team managing cash flow forecasts and highlighting shortfalls and compliance with finance agreement ratios
  • Ensuring that distributions to shareholders occur timeously
  • Ensure timeous receipts of debtors’ balance and creditor payments
  • Maintain debt schedules and repayment of debt
3. Statutory and Compliance Reporting:
  • Prepare quarterly reports to lenders include compliance certificates
  • Ad hoc compliance reports from various institutions including Stats SA, NERSA, etc.
  • Report procurement spend for the quarter to the economic development team
4. Budgeting and Forecasting:
  • Partner with the operations teams on the budgeting and forecasting process
  • Complete budget reporting templates
  • Upload of budgets into the accounting system
5. Support the Broader Team:
  • Ad hoc support to the finance and operations team on items including but not limited to: BBBEE reporting, vendor management, Economic Development reporting, etc.
  • Undertake ad hoc finance responsibilities in support of the Globeleq group, as appropriate

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Skills and Competencies:
  • Sound technical, business and financial reporting skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Delivery-oriented, able to manage time, prioritize and to adhere to strict deadlines
  • Able to solve problems logically
  • Willing to travel occasionally within South Africa to Power Plants and Johannesburg office
  • Excellent verbal communication; includes being responsive, having good listening skills and being able to communicate appropriately with all levels of personnel
  • Excellent written communication; includes writing clear, concise e-mails and report-writing
  • Excellent team player; able to balance team and individual responsibilities
  • Able to self-manage and work well independently
  • Able and willing to learn quickly
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and challenging environment
Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications:
  • Minimum Chartered Accountant (CA) (SA) qualification or equivalent NQF level qualification
  • Minimum 3 years' post-qualifying (or post articles) experience in a commercial and/or corporate environment (outside of audit)
  • Relevant experience working with Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • Relevant working experience with an ERP system
  • Relevant working experience loading payments on a banking profile
  • Knowledge of financial systems, financial processes and internal control mechanisms
  • Renewable energy experience is an advantage
  • Experience in a shared services environment is an advantage
  • Experience in a multi-company or multi-entity is an advantage
  • Experience in an asset-intensive organisation is an advantage
