The Project is well advanced in its development including contractor selection, planning permissions, site studies, land agreements, and financing and project agreements.
Financing is being arranged through South African commercial banks and sponsor equity.
A single EPC construction company will construct the Project under a bespoke turn-key EPC contract. The EPC contractor is expected to have multiple key subcontractors who specialise in electrical and civil works. The EPC contractor is also responsible for delivery of the battery which will be containerised lithium-ion technology.
Construction is expected to commence around June 2025 with a minimum construction period of 24 months.

Main Purpose of Role
The Contracts Manager’s primary role is to ensure Employer’s compliance with all contractual obligations, contractors’ compliance with all contractual obligations and to manage all formal (including legal) notifications and interfaces. The Contracts Manager shall lead the response to all claims and enforcement of contractual rights to ensure the success of the project.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand and interpret all contracts; and where necessary assist the development team in closing out any remaining contractual issues or conditions precedent,
- Prepare management plans, check lists and any other such management aids relating to contracts management,
- Ensure the Projects Team is appraised of all contractual obligations within their functions, assist them identify functional risks and develop compliant mitigation measures,
- In conjunction with the Project Director, identify and assess potential Project risks and develop the Risk Register,
- Ensure all contract documentation, bonds, insurances, permits and social contracts are in place prior to project commencement,
- Assist and or manage the mobilisation of the Employer’s project team,
- In conjunction with Finance and Project Director, extrapolate the Project Budget into a detailed costing and payments plan and develop the project drawdown schedule.
Contract Administration:
- Contractual Compliance: Ensure all project activities comply with the agreed-upon terms and conditions by monitoring deliverables, timelines and performance standards. Ensure compliance to all relevant regulations and industry standards,
- Change Management: Assessing and managing variations to the contract, such as Change Orders, Early Warning Notices, Non-Performance Notices and Compensation Events. Ensure all additional change/variation orders and notices are properly authorised, tracked and monitored,
- Claims Management: Preparing, evaluating and resolving claims in a contractually timeous manner to safeguard the project’s financial and operational interests,
- Ensuring documentation and control of correspondence is managed effectively to ensure all disputes are fully supported and justified,
- Attend contractor progress meetings.
- Managing Variations, Compensation Event, Valuations and other cost implications to minimise cost overruns,
- Reviewing invoices and ensuring timely payments of contractors, providing input into contra-charges to be applied,
- Analyse costs and identify areas for cost savings to provide insight for Project Director to assist/influence EPC decisions and actions.
- Identify and assess potential risks associated with contractor performance,
- Assist the Project Director develop mitigation strategies,
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards.
- Attend contractor progress meetings to stay abreast of contractual risks,
- Assist the Project Director with the preparation of Project Progress Reports to ensure realistic assessments on the commercial position of the project,
- Collaborate with legal advisors to interpret complex contractual clauses and to address disputes effectively.
- Close-out all disputes and claims,
- Prepare final project reports,
- Ensure completeness of Document Management System, ensuring that all documentation related to identified claims and risks are filed and are an accurate representation of the events,
- Participate in and assist in the development of the lessons learned file.
Skills and Competencies, Experience, Knowledge & Qualifications
- Knowledge of forms of contract, in particular FIDIC style contracts,
- Experience of working on construction projects, preferably power infrastructure.
- Must be physically fit to pass Site Medical Tests
- Must possess Drivers Licence
- Ability to communicate in English and Afrikaans (spoken and written),
- Strong negotiator,
- Collaborative mindset, but with ability to play within the constraints of the project contractual framework,
- Strong team player,
- Strong attention to detail,
- Structured thinker,
- Inherent understanding of contractor motivators and ability to influence in a positive manner,
- Learned ability to forecast and predict events based on project progress status
- Quantity Surveyor / Bachelors or equivalent related qualification in the built environment / SACPCMP registration,
- 5 years’ experience in managing through a FIDIC, NEC or GCC contract (or similar EPC contractual framework),
- Understanding of project finance documents,
- Experience in REIPPP or ESIPPP programme documents,
- Previous renewable energy experience, with a solid understanding of the related contractor and sub-contractor ecosystem is highly advantageous,
- Exposure to/knowledge of Battery Environmental and Safety Hazards advantageous,
- Detailed knowledge of the OSHAct.
