In this role, the Power Engineer will provide expert technical support to staff based onsite at the various operational assets within the Globeleq South Africa Management Services portfolio. The Power Engineer may also be expected to provide ad-hoc technical support in the development of new operational assets.
The Power Engineer supports the technical change management responsibility which is implemented onsite by the O&M teams. The Power Engineer designs and implements change control systems to ensure technical changes within the operational assets are executed.
The Power Engineer will lead the design and execution of designated remediation and retrofit projects determined by the Engineering Manager.
The role is based in Cape Town and will require frequent travel for onsite activities.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical support to the Shared Services team as and when required
- Identify need/gap and define project scope in consultation with relevant stakeholders for defined projects
- Lead or assist in the contractor procurement process
- Lead or assist in project management/execution
- Participate in project review and close-out
- Provide expert support on troubleshooting and technical deep dive interventions
- Provide specialist primary and secondary plant support to the operating plants
- Drive engineering focused improvement initiatives
- Provide specialist primary and secondary plant support to the operating plants
- Provide advanced insight on equipment condition based on data collected through engineering systems
- Advise on maintenance best practice guides
- Drive initiatives to reduce risk exposure
- Support the operating assets on improvement initiatives to maintenance plans and provide technical feedback
- Compile primary and/or secondary plant specifications and design standards
- Support with major failures and incident investigations where necessary
- Support with advanced technical training
- Act as engineering representative in relevant management committee forums
- Compile key primary and/or secondary plant specifications
- Compile key primary and/or secondary plant design standards
- Support the audit process for implemented technical initiatives and/or changes
- Solve complex, ill-defined, and poorly scoped problems
- Identify training needs and perform internal technical training as necessary
- Provide ad-hoc technical feedback on maintenance activities and plant condition
- Support the Engineering change control system
- Co-manage technical document governance process
- Manage the engineering specification input to guide spare parts and consumables obsolescence processes
- Review deviations to the maintenance plan and support the development of new and updated maintenance plans
- Identify need/gap and define project scope in consultation with relevant stakeholders
- Lead or assist in the contractor procurement process
- Lead or assist in project management/execution
- Participate in project review and close-out
- Apply learnings from the operational fleet to provide expert input to the Development Engineering team for new renewable facilities, including Employer’s Requirements, equipment selection and standardisation and plant design layouts
- Support Due Diligence process for M&A transactions including site visits and detailed reports
- Supporting the quality control process in terms of SAT and FAT
- Support and maintain grid code compliance of all operational assets, this includes leading/supporting grid code remediation projects, conducting internal and RETEC compliance testing
- Manage all internal and external stakeholders relating to the maintaining grid code compliance, including the NSP, RETEC, LTA’s, NERSA, Auditors and Asset Director’s
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Minimum of five years’ experience in design and/or maintenance and/or operation of power systems
- B.Sc. Eng/B.Eng. in Electro-mechanical, Mechatronics engineering or NQF equivalent
- Working towards ECSA professional registration
- Knowledge of primary and secondary plant testing
- Formal training and/or significant proven experience in project management
- Experience in running an engineering change control system
- Experience in Microsoft Project Server or similar project management system would be an advantage
- Experience in electrical safety training including Operating Regulations for High Voltage Systems (ORHVS)
- Experience in implementing NFPA 70E and/or IEEE 1584 standards
- Demonstrated experience in LV, MV and HV electrical systems
- Experience in wind and photovoltaic plants would be an advantage
- Technical expertise and experience in Root Cause Analysis and risk management
- Experience in wind and photovoltaic plants would be an advantage
- A valid light vehicle driver’s license is required
- Able to analyse complex technical problems in order to ascertain and address the root cause
- Able to explain complex technical concepts in order to influence a variety of audiences
- Able to balance technical and commercial considerations in making recommendations
- Working knowledge of computerised maintenance management systems
- Very good MS Word and MS Excel skills, good MS PowerPoint skills and exposure to MS project (or similar) would be an advantage
- Strong verbal communication, i.e. able to express ideas clearly face-to-face and in meetings and able to persuade others without having direct authority
- Strong written communication, including clear report-writing, concise emails and competent presentation skills
- Able to manage stress and high-pressure situations
- Demonstrates initiative and is able to work independently
- Good team player; able to balance team and individual responsibilities.
- Able to handle multiple projects, prioritise work and work effectively under limited supervision
