About Farm to Feed:

Farm to Feed is a pioneering end-to-end digital platform focused on aggregating the full harvest from farmers in Africa and selling this to commercial kitchens. Our mission is to reduce food loss, enhance farmer incomes, and contribute to climate change mitigation by creating sustainable supply chains.

Farm to Feed’s tech platform consists of an inhouse built ERP, E-commerce platform and mobile app for suppliers.

Position Overview:

The Technical Director of Engineering is a hands-on leader with a deep understanding of the latest technologies and programming languages. Your focus is on guiding the technical direction of Farm to Feed, ensuring that the engineering team stays up-to-date with industry advancements and leverages the most appropriate tools and methodologies, optimizing the workflow to reduce time-to-market while maintaining high-quality standards.

The Director of Engineering we are looking for has a strong background in software development, network architecture and cloud computing, ensuring that our infrastructure is scalable, reliable and secure.

This is a senior leadership role, reporting to the CPO, and responsible for overseeing and guiding the strategic direction of Farm to Feed’s engineering efforts. This pivotal position serves as the bridge between the technical and business realms, ensuring that engineering initiatives align with the company's overall objectives and drive innovation. You will build and lead the tech team, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing and communicating the engineering vision, strategy, and technical direction for the organisation
  • Overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of our software systems, platforms, and infrastructure
  • Ensuring adherence to industry best practices, coding standards, and software development methodologies
  • Ensuring compliance with data protection regulation and cyber security best practices
  • Driving continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, and technologies to enhance efficiency and productivity
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues
  • Collaborating with product management, design, and other cross-functional teams to align
  • engineering efforts with business goals and technical roadmap
  • Overseeing the allocation of engineering resources and project timelines to ensure optimal budget utilization
  • Monitoring and evaluating the performance of engineering teams, projects, and initiatives against defined metrics and KPIs
  • Building and leading high-performing engineering teams by attracting, retaining, and developing top talent
  • Mentoring and coaching engineering managers and technical leaders to foster professional growth and leadership skills
  • Fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and technical excellence within the engineering organisation
  • Representing the engineering organisation at executive-level meetings and communicating technical insights to stakeholders
  • Staying abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices to drive innovation and maintain a competitive edge
  • Managing relationships with key technology partners and vendors

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is preferred
  • A minimum of seven years experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of leading and managing engineering teams
  • Strong technical expertise, including hands-on experience with programming languages, cloud-based platforms (specifically AWS), and DevOps tools
  • Technical experience with development of e-commerce, ERP and mobile app systems
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with software development methodologies and best practices, specifically Agile and Scrum
  • Experience in leading and managing large-scale, complex engineering projects
  • Passion for staying up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends, and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams
  • Strong project management and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and deliver results under tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Kenyan Nationality is preferred
