Delta40 is reimagining the way we invest in and support the next generation of entrepreneurs across Africa with a unique VC and Venture Studio Model. Our mission is to increase incomes and tackle climate change in Africa by building and investing in climate and livelihood innovations. More specifically, we invest in technology-enabled energy, agriculture, and mobility ventures led by experienced and diverse African and Female Founders. To date, Delta40 has worked with world-class partners such as Autodesk, Novo Nordisk, Skoll, Emerson Collective, and commercial investors to build a portfolio of climate ventures operating in 30 countries across the continent. By 2030, we will grow our portfolio and expand our venture studio ecosystem to impact more than 100M lives and catalyze $1B into the fastest-growing market on Planet Earth. We also aspire to build a scalable venture studio model that can be used to increase the speed and scale of venture building in other sectors and geographies in emerging markets.
About the Role
We are seeking a (Senior) Associate with prior experience as an investment analyst or management consultant at a reputable firm to support entrepreneurs in the Delta40 studio to take their start-up to the next level. Your role will include creating investor materials, conducting financial analysis, and performing market research, as needed by the entrepreneurs. You will be part of a team of associates reporting to our Managing Director who, along with our fractional C-Suite resources, assists our ventures with commercial strategy, talent recruitment, finance set up, strategic advisory and raising Seed and Series A funding.
Core Responsibilities
As the Delta40 Venture Studio is new, this role may change as the needs of the organisation change. To begin, this role will have the following responsibilities:
Quantitative analysis
- Create sophisticated 3-statement, 5-year financial projections which can be used by entrepreneurs to understand their business and successfully raise a Series A round.
- Support entrepreneurs to create and update their market sizing, including TAM, SAM, SOM.
- Analyze market research data, create impactful charts and graphs, and draw out useful insights.
- Calculate unit economics and help start-ups to generate ideas to improve profitability.
Investor materials preparation
- Assist entrepreneurs to create and update investor materials including pitch decks and investor memos (in PowerPoint/Google Slides and Word).
- Draft grant application narratives, including customizing the story and messaging for the funder’s requirements
Market research
- Help entrepreneurs to design surveys to collect necessary market/customer data.
- Conduct internet-based research for publicly available information on potential competitors, partners, and market stakeholders.
- Read and summarize market reports, including drawing out key insights and tailoring content to the entrepreneur’s needs
Other
- Assist in the preparation of internal and external materials, presentations and toolkits relevant to our ventures.
- Support Directors with ad hoc requests related to venture support including reports, summaries, research decks, etc.
YOUR PROFILE
You must bring 4-6 years of experience as an investment analyst or management consultant at a reputable firm and have a passion for innovation and entrepreneurship in Africa. Ideally, you will also have 1-2 years of experience in a startup, entrepreneurial initiative or intrapreneurial role (side hustles count too!)
Qualifications & Experience
- Excel “Wizard”: previous experience independently creating 3-statement financial projections.
- Excellent data analysis skills: previous experience cleaning raw data and creating impactful charts and graphs; understanding of the most critical information to display for the audience at hand.
- Prior experience creating investor material: understanding of what is expecting in pitch decks/investor memos and excellent PowerPoint skills.
- Excellent writing skills: including previous experience preparing fundraising narratives such as grant applications or business plans (in Word).
- Critical thinking: ability to draw out key insights from large amounts of information and understand what matters most to the entrepreneur.
- Attention to detail: practised in self-reviewing your own work to correct spelling, grammatical or careless quantitative errors before sending work to your manager
- Work authorization in Kenya: must be a Kenyan national based in or willing to relocate to Nairobi
