The “Ecosystem-Based Adaptation and Mitigation in Botswana’s Communal Rangelands” Project funded by Green Climate Fund (GCF) aims to will utilize collective management of livestock and ecosystems to restore Botswana’s communal rangelands, increasing the climate resilience of vulnerable populations and reducing GHG emissions. Over 8 years, the project will undertake activities in 104 villages in the Project Areas: Ngamiland, Kgalagadi and Bobirwa geographic areas of Botswana to improve management of 4.6 million hectares of rangelands. The day-to-day activities of the Project are implemented in each of the three Project Areas, and Farmer Facilitation Lead will be responsible for overall coordination and delivery of these activities. Administratively, the project areas cover the following districts: Okavango and North West Districts (Ngamiland Area); Hukuntsi, Tsabong and Mabutsane Districts (Kgalagadi Area); and Bobirwa District (Bobirwa Area).

POSITION SUMMARY - These positions are based in Hukuntsi, Maun, Bobonong

The Rangeland Stewardship GIS Technician will support landscape-scale rangeland restoration and sustainable livestock management initiatives through the collection, validation, processing, analysis, and reporting of spatial and non-spatial data using the Rangeland Stewardship Information Portal (RSIP).

The incumbent will serve as the primary district-level focal point for data management, GIS mapping, restoration monitoring and reporting, ensuring timely submission of daily, weekly and monthly implementation data from restoration and livestock management teams. The position will contribute to evidence-based decision-making, adaptive management and reporting of EbA GCF Project results.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Data Collection and Information Management

  • Receive, review and process daily, weekly and monthly field reports from restoration and livestock management teams.
  • Capture, validate and upload field data into the Rangeland Stewardship Information Portal.
  • Ensure completeness, accuracy and timeliness of project datasets.
  • Maintain district databases for restoration, grazing management and livestock-related interventions.
  • Conduct routine quality assurance and quality control checks on incoming field data.
  • Resolve data quality issues with field teams and district supervisors.

GIS and Spatial Analysis

  • Prepare and maintain GIS databases and spatial layers related to rangeland restoration activities.
  • Produce maps showing restoration sites, grazing areas, boreholes, livestock corridors, fire management activities and other project interventions.
  • Support monitoring of restoration progress through satellite imagery and geospatial data analysis.
  • Generate spatial reports and visual dashboards for district and project management.
  • Assist with landscape-level assessments related to rangeland condition and ecosystem restoration.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Generate daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports from the RSIP.
  • Track implementation indicators and progress against annual work plans.
  • Support verification of restoration outputs and outcomes in project sites.
  • Compile district reports for submission to DFRR and the EbA GCF Project Management Unit.
  • Support preparation of donor reports and performance reviews.

Field Monitoring and Verification

  • Participate in field visits to verify reported activities.
  • Support geo-referencing of restoration and livestock management interventions.
  • Collect GPS coordinates, photographs, and field observations to support monitoring activities.
  • Assist with vegetation, rangeland condition, and restoration monitoring assessments.

Capacity Building and User Support

  • Provide technical support to government officers and field teams using the RSIP.
  • Train field data collectors and extension officers on digital data collection tools.
  • Promote standardized reporting procedures across project landscapes.
  • Develop user guides and simple reference materials as required.

Knowledge Management and Learning

  • Support documentation of lessons learned and best practices from restoration and stewardship interventions.
  • Contribute spatial information and data products for project communication materials.
  • Facilitate sharing of information between project sites and stakeholders.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Normal office environment hosted in the Ministry of Environment & Tourism.
  • Working outside normal working hours.
  • Ability to travel frequently in the remote areas within the Project Area.
  • Ability to work with local partners.
  • High adaptability to difficult conditions.

  • This role will be a fixed-term assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Up to 2 years of related experience in GIS, environmental monitoring, or natural resource management.
  • Experience working with communal livestock farmers.
  • Practical experience using GIS software (ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, QGIS, or similar).
  • Experience with GPS data collection and field surveys.
  • Demonstrated experience managing geospatial databases and reporting systems.
  • Proven experience producing spatial analysis products and management reports.
  • Experience training users and supporting information systems implementation.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and digital data collection platforms.
  • Must be dynamic, with strong inspiration and motivation to live and work within communities, able to communicate well with stakeholders so as to ensure project understanding, buy-in and compliance.
  • Understanding of Botswana's rangeland and livestock production systems is advantageous.
  • Experience working with government, community-based natural resource management initiatives or development projects will be an asset.
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills.
  • Must have adequate working experience in multi-disciplinary teams and proven supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with international development partners or agencies will also be a significant advantage.
  • Proven ability to multitask and meet priorities. Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Preferred

  • Degree in BSc Cartography/ Geographical Information System (GIS)/Remote Sensing/ Geoinformatics or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
  • Work experience and existing networks in agriculture, NGOs, community development, local authorities, or government at cluster level.
  • Knowledge of Botswana's rangeland governance framework and livestock sector preferred.
  • Experience with remote sensing and satellite imagery analysis.
  • Experience using cloud-based GIS and dashboard platforms.
  • Knowledge of restoration monitoring methodologies.
  • Proven ability to work across teams.
  • Supporting other staff in the implementation of project-related activities for the exigency of the service.
