The “Ecosystem-Based Adaptation and Mitigation in Botswana’s Communal Rangelands” Project funded by Green Climate Fund (GCF) aims to will utilize collective management of livestock and ecosystems to restore Botswana’s communal rangelands, increasing the climate resilience of vulnerable populations and reducing GHG emissions. Over 8 years, the project will undertake activities in 104 villages in the Project Areas: Ngamiland, Kgalagadi and Bobirwa geographic areas of Botswana to improve management of 4.6 million hectares of rangelands. The day-to-day activities of the Project are implemented in each of the three Project Areas, and Farmer Facilitation Lead will be responsible for overall coordination and delivery of these activities. Administratively, the project areas cover the following districts: Okavango and North West Districts (Ngamiland Area); Hukuntsi, Tsabong and Mabutsane Districts (Kgalagadi Area); and Bobirwa District (Bobirwa Area).
POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Maun, Tshane and Bobonong
The Veterinary Technician will support the implementation of the Commodity-Based Trade (CBT) Strategy through the delivery of vaccination and herd health programmes within targeted landscapes. The incumbent will work closely with farmers committees, extension personnel, and Veterinary Services staff to improve animal health, disease surveillance, and compliance with CBT protocols.
The position is critical to achieving the project's livestock productivity, animal health, and climate resilience objectives. Effective delivery of vaccination and herd health interventions contributes to improved herd health and sustainable rangeland restoration outcomes, supporting the project's target of mitigating approximately 4.7 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (MtCO₂e) over the project period.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Vaccination Programme Delivery
- Implement vaccination campaigns in accordance with national veterinary policies and the CBT Strategy.
- Assist in planning, scheduling, and coordinating vaccination activities in assigned areas.
- Ensure proper vaccine handling, cold chain management, and administration procedures.
- Maintain accurate vaccination records and databases.
Herd Health Management
- Deliver herd health programmes aimed at improving livestock productivity and disease prevention.
- Conduct routine animal health assessments and advise farmers on preventive animal health measures.
- Support the diagnosis, reporting, and management of livestock diseases.
- Promote best practices in biosecurity, livestock husbandry, and animal welfare.
Commodity-Based Trade (CBT) Support
- Monitor compliance with livestock health requirements under CBT protocols.
- Collect and maintain records relating to animals managed and sold under CBT arrangements.
- Prepare and submit reports to the CBT Manager on livestock movements and animals sold through CBT protocols.
- Support traceability and record-keeping requirements necessary for market access.
Disease Surveillance and Monitoring
- Participate in disease surveillance activities and outbreak investigations.
- Collect field data and samples as required by Veterinary Services.
- Monitor herd health trends and escalate animal health risks appropriately.
Stakeholder Engagement and Farmer Support
- Provide technical support and training to farmers and community livestock groups.
- Liaise with Veterinary Services personnel, extension officers, producer associations, and project stakeholders.
- Facilitate awareness programmes on disease prevention and herd health management.
Data Collection and Reporting
- Maintain accurate field records and project documentation.
- Compile periodic reports on vaccination coverage, herd health interventions, disease surveillance activities, and CBT implementation.
- Contribute to project monitoring, evaluation, and learning requirements.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to all veterinary, occupational health and safety, and safeguards procedures.
- Ensure compliance with project, Department of Veterinary Services, and national regulatory requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Normal office environment hosted in the Ministry of Lands & Agriculture.
- Working outside normal working hours.
- Ability to travel frequently in the remote areas within the Project Area.
- Ability to work with local partners.

- This role will be a fixed-term assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Diploma in Animal Health and Production, from a recognized institution.
- Must have 2 to 4 years of related work experience in managing community relationships, management and livestock husbandry, data collection and management, rural development and people supervision.
- Experience working with communal livestock farmers.
- Exposure to livestock value chains, traceability systems, or Commodity-Based Trade programmes.
- Must be dynamic, with strong inspiration and motivation to live and work within communities, able to communicate well with stakeholders so as to ensure project understanding, buy-in and compliance.
- Must have good writing and speaking skills in Setswana and English; however, specific area local language will be an added advantage.
- Must have adequate working experience in multi-disciplinary teams and proven supervisory experience.
- Experience working with international development partners or agencies will also be a significant advantage.
- Proven ability to multitask and meet priorities.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
Preferred
- Work experience and existing networks in agriculture, NGOs, community development, local authorities or government at cluster level
- Proven ability to manage teams
- Supporting other staff in the implementation of project-related activities for the exigency of the service.
