POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Antsiranana, Madagascar

CI Madagascar manages one Marine Protected Area in the north of Madagascar called Ambodivahibe. Many activities are implemented in the site mainly focused on the management plan and the safeguard plan of the Ambodivahibe Marine Protected Area.

The Field Agent at Corridor Marin des Sept Baies - Marine Protected Area is responsible for:

• Community’s social organization: most of the time in the field to organize and lead all activities related to the local organizations (involvement of the communities in conservation and marine resource management), develop and conduct need assessment on training and capacity building for the local structure to improve the management of the protected area, monitor and assess all development activities implemented in the fields by the communities.

• Contribute to the mapping of restoration areas, establishment and management of a nursery center, mangrove restoration organization, and monitoring. Training the local community on mangrove restoration methods, propagule quality, and restoration strata by mangrove species.

• Communication and sensitization: develop a communication strategy between CI and local Communities and local Authority, work closely with the local associations and the main partners in the site.

• Data collection and reporting: collect / periodically update the data necessary to improve the management of marine protected areas (ecological monitoring of conservation targets and fishery production data collection - CPUE), update databases of the monitoring activities, and report back to the local Communities about the monitoring results.

• Work planning and monitoring and evaluation: contribute to the establishment of quarterly, half-yearly, and annual work plans for Antsiranana regional office; provide elements to feed the tools for monitoring and evaluation as good matrix, METT, and scorecard.

• Organization of meetings and workshops at regional and local level: support the team during the meetings organization and workshops held at the regional (DIANA) and local level.

They lead field activities, including

• Control and surveillance, restoration, and ecological monitoring

• Execute social-organization activities

• Collects field data and monitor the functionality of the reserves.

• Train monitoring activities and Data Collection to the participatory ecological monitoring agents.

• Conduct communication between CI and local Communities and local authorities.

• Support the logistics of activities as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Ability to live and work in remote areas.

• Often based in the field site 70km from the town and move from one village to another by motorcycle every week (4 villages per week).

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Up to two years of experience in social organization of community structures in rural development and natural resource management.

• Solid educational background and proven experience in the field of marine ecological monitoring.

• Supervision of the local organizations in terms of management and local communities’ involvement.

• Supervision of the platform co-manager of the Marine Protected Area (MPA) and the Community Patrol Team (APC) and participatory ecological monitoring agents (SEP).

Preferred

• License’s degree in natural or marine sciences.

• Be familiar with social context in the north of Madagascar and in particular the rural communes surrounding Ambodivahibe Marine Protected Area and its extension.

• High ability to adapt to rural conditions.

• Master of the local customs and other social contexts.
