POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Germany remotely (ideally in Berlin or Frankfurt)

CI Europe leads CIs engagement with European institutions and other key stakeholders in politics, corporations, and civil society relevant to CIs global mission. Building upon its strong foundation of science, partnerships, and field programs. Conservation International (CI) now wants to develop its network in Germany further.

The person we are looking for will raise CIs profile with German stakeholders, including NGOs, public and private donors, and government institutions. This position is based in Germany, with frequent travel to Brussels, Belgium, and across Germany. The person is expected to make good use of CI’s existing German network and expand it. They will promote CI’s overall policy objective. They will report to the Vice-President of European Partnerships and Strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The position requires an exceptional degree of responsibility and at the same time independent and innovative work:

  • CI’s key lead for our German partners and stakeholders, such as other NGOs, public and private donors, business, finance, and government institutions.
  • Reflect German stakeholders’ priorities in the development of CI‘s strategy and policies.
  • Represent CI in relevant meetings and forums with German policymakers and major donors.
  • Drive and support ambitious domestic ideas and policy options around UNFCCC, the UN Biodiversity Convention (CBD), and the domestic agenda for international biodiversity and other issues of global sustainability.
  • Drive our engagement with the Frankfurt Conservation Centre, Potsdam Institute, and other German research institutes.
  • Working with colleagues from CI’s Conservation Finance Division, you seek to engage the Sustainable Finance community to invest in CI projects.
  • Support colleagues from across the organization to build relationships with existing and new corporate partners.
  • Engaging internally you contribute to the overall CI Strategy for Europe, including advising on and managing expansion and growth in Germany.
  • Provide support and insights to CI colleagues engaging with German partners.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This is a full-time permanent position.
  • Candidates should be EU nationals or have a valid work permit for Germany.
  • Traveling required (less than 25%) mostly within Germany and occasionally to Europe headquarters in Brussels. Some other international travel may be required (typically 1x per year).

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • A Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, public policy, international relations/development studies, or natural resource management and 7 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Good knowledge of German institutional frameworks (active contacts in relevant government sectors and associated development communities is a plus).
  • Experience in fundraising and network, developing and managing partnerships.
  • Good understanding of nature conservation, development, and political issues in Germany, Europe, and globally.
  • Desire and proven experience working in a highly autonomous role.
  • Strong program management skills.
  • Strong writing and oral skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a culturally diverse environment that requires collaboration and networking with others in dispersed locations.
  • Willingness to travel (less than 25% of time).
  • Excellent command of German and English is indispensable.
