Overview
The temporary seed procurement and data management technician will support the implementation of tree seed procurement under TREPA and RTRP-Seed project and other Theme Tree Diversity and Productivity Rwanda projects by assisting in seed source identification, seed collection, field data collection and monitoring activities, and seedlings production to ensure the timely availability of high-quality, genetically diverse and climate-adapted tree seeds for restoration initiatives. Further, the seed procurement and data management technician will contribute to establishment of seed sources together with the team.
Job Description
1. Seed Collection
- Participate in field surveys to identify and describe priority seed sources and plus trees.
- Support seed collection from natural forests, farmland, plantations, breeding seed orchards, mother blocks, and other approved seed sources.
- Assist in monitoring flowering, fruiting, and seed maturity of priority tree species.
- Ensure proper labeling, traceability, and handling of collected seed lots.
2. Seed Orchard Support
- Assist in establishing and maintaining Breeding Seed Orchards (BSOs) and Mother Blocks (MBs) and other seed production stands
3. Training and Stakeholder Support
- Support training sessions for seed cooperatives, and nursery operators, NGOs, and government agencies
- Demonstrate proper seed collection and handling techniques during field activities.
- Work closely with local authorities and community members during field implementation.
4. Logistics
- Prepare field equipment before missions.
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of field tools and equipment.
- Assist with transport and safe delivery of collected seeds to designated destinations
Education, Experience and Technical skills
1.B. Sc. in forestry with a broad understanding of seed delivery systems. 2.A minimum of 6 months to 1 year’ post-graduate working experience including experience in research in tree seed procurement/seed technology. 3.Post- graduate studies in either of the two subjects and/or experience from similar positions elsewhere will be considered an additional advantage.
Terms and conditions
•This is a temporary position for Locally Recruited Staff (LRS). CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration in local currency commensurate with skills and experience. •The appointment will be for be for 6 months. •The duty station will be in Kigali, Rwanda
