Ampersand is Africa’s E-mobility pioneer. Ampersand provides electric motorcycles and charging infrastructure (battery swap stations), uniquely tailored to serve half of Africa’s road fleet: Commercial motorcycle taxi and delivery drivers. Moto taxis are a primary means of public transport in African cities, and it is estimated that these drivers spend >$6Bn p.a. on gasoline in East Africa alone. Ampersand has developed an electric solution that is more powerful, fun to drive, and cost-effective than the incumbent. Ampersand drivers routinely earn over 30% more income by going electric.
The company started in Kigali, Rwanda, and expanded into Nairobi, Kenya in 2022. Today it has around 6,000 e-motorcycles on the road and 60 battery swap stations across the two countries. Ampersand is leading the market in quality, affordable tech, customer traction, and operational systems. The Ampersand team consists of 400+ staff drawn from diverse backgrounds and is working hard to see all 5 million taxi motorbikes in East Africa become electric by 2030. About the Role
The Health & Safety Officer will lead the implementation and continuous improvement of workplace health, safety, and environmental practices across all Ampersand sites. The role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and other statutory authorities, while building a strong culture of safety across the organization.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement workplace health and safety policies and procedures aligned with Kenyan Occupational Safety and Health regulations and environmental requirements.
- Ensure compliance with statutory bodies including DOSH, NEMA, county authorities, and other relevant regulators through timely reporting, audits, and inspections.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments across workplace stations to identify hazards and implement mitigation measures.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions to reduce recurrence.
- Develop and deliver practical safety awareness initiatives, including induction, toolbox talks, emergency preparedness training, and role-specific safety briefings.
- Establish and maintain incident reporting and safety performance tracking systems including safety metrics, logs, and compliance documentation.
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans including fire safety procedures, evacuation protocols, and emergency drills.
- Ensure proper use, availability, and management of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across all operational teams.
- Collaborate with operations teams to embed safe work procedures into daily workflows and operational processes.
- Support environmental compliance initiatives, including waste management, battery handling protocols, and environmental safety reporting.
- Prepare the organisation for, and coordinate, all external inspections and audits by ensuring findings are documented, and drive timely resolution of all cited deficiencies.
- Promote a strong safety culture across the organization, encouraging proactive hazard reporting and employee engagement in safety initiatives.
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in occupational health & safety, preferably in manufacturing, energy, automotive, or industrial operations.
- Strong knowledge of occupational safety and environmental regulations.
- Practical and resourceful with the ability to implement cost-effective solutions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills both written and verbal to engage effectively with customers and technical teams to enforce safety without creating resistance.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Self-driven and proactive, with a positive attitude and commitment to customer satisfaction.
