About GreenCo

GreenCo acts as an intermediary offtaker and service provider, purchasing power from renewable IPPs and selling electricity to utilities and private sector offtakers (commercial and industrial users) and across SAPP markets. GreenCo mobilises private sector capital by enabling bankable structures, accelerating procurement and contracting, and supporting delivery of transformative energy capacity addition.

GreenCo’s vision is to lead innovation and sustainably transform renewable energy markets through:

  • Market integration and scalable commercial structures that unlock investment in renewable generation.
  • Innovative, financeable solutions that increase speed-to-market for new projects and customer supply.
  • An agile, high-ownership culture with strong accountability and measurable delivery.

GreenCo offers a dynamic environment with strong potential for professional development and career advancement.

The Role in Context

The Communications & Marketing Officer is the custodian of how GreenCo's story is told and how the organisation shows up in the world — from Johannesburg outward across SADC and the wider African energy market.

The role has two interlocking responsibilities: building and running GreenCo's marketing engine — campaigns, digital channels, content, events, and CRM — and maintaining the institutional quality, narrative consistency, and reputational integrity of everything GreenCo publishes or presents externally. Based in Johannesburg, the Officer is GreenCo's primary presence in the South African market and the lead voice in the country's energy transition conversation on behalf of the organisation.

Reporting to the CEO, the Officer owns the day-to-day communications and marketing engine while also serving as the guardian of GreenCo's brand, narrative, and communications quality. The CEO retains final authority on strategic communications decisions, media positioning, and high-level stakeholder messaging, with this role providing drafting, coordination, and advisory support.

The Officer works in close coordination with GreenCo's Communications & Marketing Officer based in Lusaka, Zambia, who holds the broader SADC regional portfolio. Both roles report directly to the CEO. Day-to-day coordination between the two Officers ensures editorial alignment, consistent brand application, non-duplication of content, and coherent sequencing of campaigns and communications across GreenCo's markets.

Key Deliverables

1. Marketing Strategy & Campaign Delivery

  • Develop and manage the marketing plan (channels, audiences, campaign calendar, content pipeline) for South Africa with SADC reach.
  • Plan and deliver priority campaigns (events, webinars, announcements, awards) aligned to BD priorities and the SA market calendar.
  • Own the content calendar and channel operations (LinkedIn as primary channel; website and other social platforms).
  • Run CRM-driven email marketing/newsletters; test improvements to grow reach and conversion.
  • Set KPIs and report monthly on performance, delivery, and BD support.

2. Content Creation & Digital Presence

  • Produce and commission content across formats (social, video, infographics, case studies, brochures, decks).
  • Write institutional long-form content for DFI/government/utility audiences, grounded in the SA policy/regulatory context.
  • Manage website updates and basic SEO; track analytics to improve content and conversions.
  • Manage community engagement and handle routine queries; escalate sensitive issues.
  • Coordinate designers, videographers, and other content suppliers.

3. CRM & Marketing Data Management

  • Own CRM use for marketing/communications in coordination with Business Development.
  • Maintain/grow contact lists (events, subscribers, partners, DFIs, media) with POPIA-compliant consent and list management.
  • Coordinate with BD and Legal before bulk outreach.

4. Events, Materials & Supplier Coordination

  • Coordinate branded materials production and digital assets for events and campaigns.
  • Manage printing/design/event suppliers and lead marketing/branding input for SA and regional events.
  • Manage event follow-up (content, lead capture, CRM updates, BD handover) and track materials inventory/budget.

5. Brand Governance & Institutional Messaging

  • Apply brand standards (visual identity, tone of voice, messaging) across all outputs.
  • Maintain approved messages/UVPs/boilerplate (including SA variants) and propose updates for CEO approval.
  • Quality-check external content, prevent unapproved messaging, and escalate items requiring CEO/Legal review.

6. Thought Leadership & Sector Positioning

  • Maintain a thought leadership calendar aligned to strategy, SA policy developments, and regional milestones.
  • Research and draft CEO bylined articles/op-eds for priority SA and regional outlets.
  • Prepare speaking briefs, pitch opportunities, repurpose content across channels, and track outputs in monthly reporting.

7. Stakeholder Audience Framework & External Intelligence

  • Maintain stakeholder audience map and tailored messaging frameworks (SA focus; SADC/regional stakeholders).
  • Produce a fortnightly sector intelligence brief for the CEO (policy/regulatory updates, market activity, media narrative, risks/opportunities).
  • Monitor key institutions and flag reputational risks early to inform narrative positioning.

8. Impact Communications & ESG Narrative

  • Collect, verify, and communicate GreenCo impact data with Operations/technical teams.
  • Maintain an ESG/impact narrative aligned to SDGs, JETP commitments, and relevant DFI frameworks.
  • Support investor/IFI reporting; ensure Legal-reviewed compliance; maintain a library of verified impact stats and case studies.

9. Awards, Recognition & Sector Reputation

  • Maintain an awards/recognition pipeline across SA and the region (energy, infra, DFI, climate, trade).
  • Coordinate submissions and approvals; track targets (at least one major submission per half-year) and relevant indices/certifications.

10. Communications Support & Media Coordination

  • Draft CEO-ready communications (press releases, speeches, updates, announcements, board summaries).
  • Support media engagements and reactive inquiries with briefs, key messages, Q&A, and holding statements.
  • Draft internal communications and monitor the SA media/reputation landscape, flagging risks and opportunities to the CEO.

Note: The CEO retains ownership of media relationships, spokesperson positioning, crisis response decisions, and high-level stakeholder communications. This role provides drafting, coordination, and advisory support to the CEO on these matters.

11. Cross-Team Coordination

  • Coordinate with Lusaka counterpart to align brand, editorial calendars, campaigns, and messaging across SA/SADC.
  • Work with Business Development on CRM, outreach, event follow-up, lead handover, and commercial messaging.
  • Coordinate with Finance and Operations on budgets/invoices, project inputs, case studies, impact data, and ad hoc CEO requests.

12. Reporting & Performance

  • Compile a monthly CEO report covering performance, outputs, BD support, budget, intelligence, market activity, and risks/escalations.
  • Manage the marketing delivery budget with CEO/Finance.

Key Competencies

  • Marketing planning & execution across digital channels (B2B; SA/SADC).
  • B2B LinkedIn strategy: company/executive content, targeting, and analytics.
  • Digital content production (social, video, infographics, case studies, newsletters, decks).
  • Institutional writing for DFIs/government/regulators (briefs, white papers, case studies).
  • Brand consistency and quality control across platforms and materials.
  • Strong drafting across registers (press releases, speeches, stakeholder updates, social copy).
  • Thought leadership support: research, drafting, and publication readiness (SA trade/DFI outlets).
  • Working knowledge of SA energy policy/regulation and institutions (NERSA, DMRE, IPP Office, Eskom, JETP).
  • Understanding of SAWEM, market liberalisation, and cross-border power trading implications.
  • Effective coordination with a counterpart team (e.g., Lusaka) to stay aligned and avoid duplication.
  • Impact/ESG literacy: interpret and communicate energy impact data credibly (avoid greenwashing).
  • Comfort with CRM, digital analytics, and performance reporting.
  • Practical AI tool use for drafting/research/insights; understands institutional risks and limits.
  • Supplier, print, and event logistics coordination (deadline/budget).
  • Sound judgement and timely escalation, especially for regulatory/political/reputation risk.
  • POPIA/data protection awareness for marketing and contact management.
  • Self-directed, able to prioritise and deliver in a lean, fast-paced environment.

Escalation Protocol

The Officer operates within a clear approval framework. Routine marketing content — scheduled social posts, newsletter editions, standard event materials, and website updates — may be published within the standing content calendar and brand guidelines without case-by-case sign-off.

Content touching partnerships, named stakeholders, commercial claims, thought leadership articles, or co-branding requires CEO approval before publication. Crisis communications, regulatory matters, ESG claims, media statements, investor and IFI communications are CEO-led, with the Officer providing drafting and coordination support.

Role Boundaries

This role does not:

  • Own media relationships or serve as GreenCo's spokesperson (these remain with the CEO).
  • Make final decisions on crisis response strategy (the CEO leads; the Officer supports).
  • Make commitments to regulators, IFIs, government bodies, or funding partners.
  • Make binding commercial representations to clients or off-takers (BD leads, with this role providing messaging support).
  • Approve expenditure above delegated authority limits

Desired Experience

  • Multi-format content creation (social, video, infographics, case studies, brochures, decks).
  • CRM-based marketing experience (e.g., HubSpot, Salesforce, Zoho).
  • Professional use of AI tools for content/research/analytics; understands responsible AI publishing.
  • Strong corporate drafting (press releases, stakeholder updates, speeches/corporate copy).
  • Thought leadership support (articles, publication pipeline, speaker briefs), ideally in energy/infra/DFI.
  • Supplier management and marketing/events budget experience (South Africa).
  • Branded materials production and event logistics coordination (South Africa).
  • Exposure to SA energy sector (REIPPPP, IPPs, wheeling, NERSA, Eskom) preferred.
  • Familiar with SAWEM, market liberalisation, and SA/SADC regulatory reform agenda preferred.
  • Experience coordinating with a counterpart office on shared brand/editorial/campaign work.
  • Regional (SADC/Africa) experience; able to adapt messaging across markets.
  • Experience in energy/infra/climate or development finance, or B2B professional services preferred.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
